Jeeze, its gonna price me out of the VW market when it comes to renewal time, I think - unless I get some good payrises in the meantime.

Think I may be keeping the GTD after the 3 years

Untill the supply of newish used cars dries up due to people not buying new, which will undoubtedly push up used prices as well.

which will mean those that do have a new car.. will also retain their higher value for longer. Hang on a minute... doesnt that mean that both new and used cars will essentially be higher due to the increase??  :undecided:

Interesting that you say that Lee, how many customers do you get through the door that are horrified at that waiting time and how many just shrug it off owing to having been told a similar story at Ford/Vauxhall/Peugeot/Citroen/BMW/Volvo dealers? Or are these manufacturers able to get builds much quicker?
Are SEAT/Skoda/Audi any quicker?

Nope especially, no.
My mother waited 4 months for a Fabia 1.2 TSI DSG.
Audi are quoting 4 months for factory order A3s still.
My local VW dealer is quoting 3-4 months on certain VWs (Tiguan) but GTI Golfs he still suggests 8 months won't be unusual.

I have lost loads of customers to other makes such as Ford/Vauxhall/Renault who were looking at the new polo for example. You want a polo 5 door any shape or size its 5 months minimum or they can go down the road and get what they want in a matter of days or worst case weeks. I know if it was me I would wait as it will be worth waiting for because used ones are not alot cheaper and there is a reason it so popular because its a cracking little car and one of the best in its class.

That must be so bloody frustrating for you as a salesman.... and is the reason I brought an x Demo GTi and would do so again.

..and is also the reason I've just bought a 1 owner, 7 month old GTD DSG with Leather and a few toys for £21.5k (+900 odd to fit 510 Nav and Btooth) against a six month wait and £29/30k list for brand new car in same spec.

Figured mine shouldn't (?) depreciate excessively anytime soon given how hard I had to look to find my little gem ! Could of course be completely wrong.

I swapped it for an A3 Sportback S-Line, S-tronic which I bought for £14.5k 24 months ago and sold for £10.5k - so depreciation worked out £166pm which I'm pretty happy about to be honest.

A was talking to a mate who works in R&D for Honda. He said that very few manufacturers were stock piling cars like they used to a few years back. This is bound to effect delivery times as there are very few unsold cars around waiting to be picked off. Virtually every car nowadays is a factory order, so needs to wait it's turn.

Also the raw materials that go into the manufacturing process are going up in price month on month, so that also will have an effect on prices and in turn new car sales.

I think it's going to be a long time untill the car market gets back to somewhere near where is was. Many people just can't be doing with the whole car buying process anymore and holding onto their current cars for longer. It's certainly not an enjoyable process these days. I used to buy a new car every 3 years, but have had my current car for nearly 6. I can see me keeping it at least untill it's 10 years old. It's not as if it's going to loose much more money.

I appreciate that adding cost is never a good a thing but am I the only one that thinks £300 when your spending £24k or so on a car isn't really that much in the grand scheme of things?

I agree with you - except it's more like £750 which is being added to the price of a 3 door GTI. All it means is giving up an option or two.

It depends how hard come by the £24k was. If people are getting dripped up, then a few quid extra a month will hardly be noticeable, but if you buy your cars with real money that you have worked hard for and saved, then every little counts.

Really? I doubt it, how much more would that add to a finance monthly payment? A few pints worth a month . . ?

dubber36 is dead right. I had a monthly finance figure I didn't want to/couldn't go over. Anything additional was out of savings.

Dubber36 you're quite right. Many VW buyers are private buyers, they buy VWs because of their percieved quality and decent-ish resale values. If you're buying a car using your company car allowance you won't generally worry too much about what things cost until it gets near to your limits and the amounts you will be paying out of your own pocket.
However if you're buying a car out of your own savings (not talking PCP deals here) or by taking a bank loan then every penny counts. Just a one off £300 rise may be fairly easy to swallow BUT we're talking rise upon rise upon rise here over the last year or so. You will only spend so much of your own money on a car (assuming you have any financial acumen) before you decide 'enough is enough'. VWs super-high resale values are a bit of a myth until the cars get quite old.
As I don't use my car much and knew I wouldn't use it at all over winter, so to cut a long story short I looked into moving the GTI on. I phoned a few VW dealers and they merely offered about £2k less than book price quoting that they can buy used GTIs direct from VW for not much money. I asked how this was as if I was to order a new GTI there would be a 5 month waiting time and yet VW have cars in stock ready to punt on to dealers at trade prices with only a handful of miles on them. None of them could answer this question without the usual car salesman sh!te. The actual book value has now dropped over £3k in two months despite the new car costs going up and up. For that sort of drop I'm quite happy to keep my GTI tucked up in the garage for a few months.
This sort of thing will kill off car sales to private individuals. If you need a car as a tool for your work then fair enough you will have to cough up what they ask. If you're buying a car out of your own monthly take home pay then it's a very different matter and indeed every penny counts and there gets to a point where you just decide to keep your existing car.
If a punter senses a bargain they'll often cough up their cash whether they need something or not. If a punter feels their pants are being pulled down they'll look elsewhere, especially during a recession.

^ Exactly what i was thinking. If i had not bought mine last year it another year until now i would not be buying. Simply because of the price.
