Title: quick Golf related question
Post by: fozziie on 14 December 2010, 17:03
Okay, i was stupid enough to get caught being a bit naughty with my car and picked up a ban...bad times i know, fortunately my car was ruined anyway and the fact is i cant afford to get a new one til next summer when im back on the road. Anyway, my insurance will no doubt be high, so i was wondering, are mk2 golfs with a 1.3 engine any good? and what insurance group are they in...i woulda gone for a 1 litre, but im guessing there pretty bloody awful.

Please tell us more about this naughtiness Alex. And you being a Law student an all.  Shame.

1.3 is "OK"  I was my first car, had it at Uni, still got it in the garage.

Don't expect blistering pace from the 4 speed box.  :lipsrsealed:

Don't know if you could even find a 1.0.  Although my 1.3 was originally a 1.0 - technically still is.

Jonathan.

lol, its Stuart, Alex is my middle name, but it's christmas, so i'll let you off. lol...i might have been drink driving, stupid thing to do i know, anyway, 12 month ban, reduced to 9 months if i do that drink awareness course. you live and learn eh! At least i remember why i hate public transport!

Well, the options were to find a 1.4 mk3, but iv had two of them before and they were horrific things, both blew headgasket in the same place, and the 4 speed box was awful....the 5 speed wasnt much better either to be honest lol.

So my thinking is that the 1.3 mk2 would be quicker than a 1.4 mk3 even though the 1.3 loses 5bhp on the 1.4, because the mk2 is lighter?

 :embarassed:  Sorry..Stuart.

Aye. Avoid the small engined MK3's....if you thought the GTI was slow...

Get the MK2...keep your insurance as low as possible.  On the plus side you can make it look like a GTI.

yeah, my last car was an mk3 1.8 and that was a decent motor...apart from all the rust underneath, the dodgy suspension and the knackered bearing. the plan is to use the first payment of student loan next august/september to buy a car, so about 1500 quid, the choices were mainly...dare i say it...clio, but then i noticed VW did a golf with a 1.3 engine and so thats now an option, plus, i do like the mk2, decent ones look far better than mk3's

There was a 1.0L mk2, but was only made in the first year of mk2 production as it was sh!te IIRC.
If I was in your position I'd go for a mk3 polo coupe, would be lighter and more fun IMO.

lol, yeah, but im vain and iv never been a fan of the polo styling, wasnt that keen on my old 6n polo (p reg, 1 litre, in 1litre purple) lol, theres just summat about an mk2, with 4 lights up front, and a set of big bumpers that i love!

cant you mate the 1.3 engine with a 5 speed box?

What about a cheap 1.6 Mk2 Driver... You can pick good ones up for under £500 if you keep watching Ebay... Use the rest to cover your insurance & buy a few GTI bits... (Rear screen, RA's, Interior) to make it look like a GTI....

Performance is still pretty good... I like to drive my lads one...

a 1.6 is definately an option, all depends on how bad the drink driving conviction hits my insurance i guess, im not expecting it to be under 2 grand for a 1.6 anyway. my 1,8 mk3 was gonna be nearly a grand before i went crazy. lol. we shall see.

seriously dont want to have to drive around in a bloody clio

1.6 golf drivers are group 9 insurance, 1.3's are group 7 and mk2 and mk3 polos are group 4.
Guess you'll have to wait and see when the time comes!

im impressed with that

I used to have a 1.3 Mk2. Not my first car but my first Mk2.

It was a great car. Would never set the world alight as you can imagine, but once it was going it was quite nippy. Only reason I sold it was because where I worked at the time the entrance/exit was on a duel carrageway. If you ever wanted to get out of an evening you had to have a car that got upto 60mph quick!

I'd have one again though if it was just pootling around town.

I've had 2 1.3 mk2's in my time and to be honest they're not that bad.
The first thing you definately want to do though is source a weber carb, it really does make a huge difference. I fitted one on my last 1.3 and despite having 200k on the clock it used to pull pretty well and used to easily reach an indicated 100mph on my private airfield. It still had a little bit left even at that speed but with the mileage I didn't want to push my luck.
Oh another bonus is it will idle perfectly from cold and start easily on even the frostiest of mornings.

I used to have a Mk2 Jetta 1.3 4 speed and I loved it. Had her for 7 years and she never missed a beat. The Pierberg carb can be a nightmare if you tamper with it as they can be temperamental. If set up correctly they run really well. Did loads of motorway miles too and at about 60 mph she returned about 40 mpg.
I'd recommend a 1.3 and i'm sure the golf will be marginally nippier, less the big boot!

definately gonna be in the hunt for another golf come august, probably a 1.6 but we shall see, as the difference in the insurance price between 1.3 and 1.6 is only about 50 quid. haha. Another mk3 if the worst comes to the worst, but preferably an mk2 :P
