Alright guys,
Its fast becoming the time to ditch my beloved MK5 GTI for something newer.
Thinking about a 2nd hand candy white 3dr MK6 GTI.
Afew questions though.....
- Stage 1 remap increases? Whats available and costs?
- Rear lights? Whos changed them over for the "R" ones and cost?
- Any known issues?
- Any advise?
Cheers guys
-
Get a newer Mk5

Couldnt tell you much about the maps, someone will be long soon for that
rear lights I think were 400-ish all in, fitting was a doddle
no issues as such from me, more just annoyances like rattles etc.
buy one, thats my only advice.

A fellow smoggie!!
I'm in Fairfield and your more than welcome to have a look/chat, also got VCDS if you need any coding tweaks done.

Maps wise you are looking at a steady 255-260bhp at the least.
Price wise it's a bit difficult to comment. For example REVO software and the SPS switch are around £500 together and then there's insurance. Alternatively private firms can be as little as £250.
I can't really comment on the rear lights because I kept the originals.
No real issues that I can think of. We all have our own little niggles and squeaks but on the whole they are fabulous cars.
-
Sounds good except the colour.....
Think about the items that come in white i.e. White goods such as....
Dishwashers
Microwaves
Fridges
Etc.
You also get quite a lot of bathroom products in this "special colour"
Showers
Toilets
Sinks
Urinals

What makes grey so exciting then Doc??
-
I agree white suited the mk5 but dark colours suit the mk6 better.
-
I feel that the Mk6 looks extremely attractive in Candy White. It gives the appearance of a car hewn out of a solid metal billet.
Even though I am not an avid lover of black alloys, these suit a white Mk6 to a tee and give it a very stealth-like look.
As for the older Mk5 being better suited to white: I don't think so. This car has too many unnecessary dark plastic add-ons which inadvertently cheapen its overall appearance IMO.

Nowt, I just like it.

Red's a nice colour too am1w.
-
White and red hide the paint issues  There is so many white ones about i see quite a few of them so i would go for red if it me and i have really warmed to the mk6 red.
-
I am at a loss to understand why so many of the other colours, apart from red and white, have paint issues. I have seen these myself now and could not believe it!
But there are two over riding problems with the flat paints: (1) They are soft and chip easily, (2) They scratch and show swirl marks more easily.
One can't seem to win on with a VW!

White and red also have these issues but its harder to see  but i can still spot them straight away now due to how many i have seen. I am yet too see one without issues and the polos suffer much worse especially in red which is a shame as i really like the polo shape
-
Snoops: I wonder if the cost cutting is going to get worse with the new Mk7. It really bugs me to see pink undercoat in the boot and other places.

260Bhp'ish isn't bad at all. Sounds good.
Sounds like ive started a war on MK6 colours
I just like it in white. Think it looks nice. My MK5 is in black which looks tasty but i fancy a change

From SteveP.
White is a nice colour, don't listen to the 'white goods' guy, he may just be a little upset because he's driving around in a car that looks like its just had a fight with a few coats of primer.

Had the 18" Monza II with black inserts fitted on my MK5 today and boy it looks sweet! Will be a sad day when it goes (but it has done 105,000 miles now so its got to go)

Don't really need to 'try again' as you put it. You picked the dullest 'colour' for your car, and not only that - it's a f**kin diesel  Those are facts.

I'll need to build a pyramid to satisfy my desires in the afterlife. Care to join me, dear?

Tis a diesel your right there touchy KeV but I expect a little more flair in the pics than a flat grey tractor.

I wasn't referring to you but if the cap fits :-)

Stop it ladies!

Maxamus:
Even with ACC in 'comfort', I still feel the ride is a bit rough on my 18" Monza Shadows. It could be the Bridgestone tyres I have. I will have to wait and see if there is an improvement with the Conti 5Ps.
Maybe, it might be best to leave the 17" wheels on if you are not too bothered with 'looks'.

Doc do your contribution to the Mk6 awards GTD rules

I'm surprised no MK6 GTI owners have painted the front VW badge matt black......
-
I will when i get a spare badge
-
I will when i get a spare badge
Why not just paint the existing one? I just used Halfords matt paint to do mine over a year ago and it still stands strong...
-
Because when i change something i always like the option of going back incase i don't like it. So i am waiting for a new badge to arrive.

That too me seems like a high price for a 09 plate. Its nearly 2 yr old with only a years warranty left.
Fair enough the guys done some mods to get it to 270BHp but still it seems a little high.
Its exactly the type im looking for though. Shame hes 300 miles away aswell

My mk5 was great but my mk 6 is better in every way. A brilliant car.
With bluefin (around £450) stage 1 you can expect 260-270 bhp and about 100 gps.
(grins per second).

Are the Golf R lights a straight swap with the GTI or is some wizardry required?
-

straight swap
-
Thanks
-
Depends on the age of the mk6.
Early 09 reg ones can have problems recoding.
Later ones can be coded.....
Late ones with the LED GTI rear lights will be a straight swop.
SteveP is the guy to talk to about them.
-
Thanks
Well, when I say straight swap, I mean for the lights. There's new wires required to be made up.

I just assumed we were talking about rear LEDs :undecided:

R lights will be my first real mod in the new year. I should have done them at the group buy time. I feel so dated now when I look at the rear of my car now. Either that or I might go over to the dark side and look at an R.

Get an R, your wife will divorce you and Steve30 and moi will go into mourning.
I don't think even an R would get up your hill unless you call it Julie Andrews.

That's what happened to me... but she's worth it... the R that is.
