i have original 18" monza 2 alloys on my Gti mk5 which i got refurbished a couple of months ago to Grey metallic from the polished silver 7.5J X 18 (they where curbed)
The problem is i don't like them on my black gti.
Red or white gti's they would be stunning..
Im considing the following but they have an offset of 45. are they ok? as i have read many forums saying stick with orginal offset of 51.
http://www.alloywheelspin.co.uk/18-vw-alloy-wheels--new-6-style-alloys-301-p.asp
Or just get my monza's refurbed again to Monza Shadow Alloy Wheels.. I need advise!!
Is there a swap site for alloys? Do i refurb them again or do i go for the reps with offset of 45 if they fit and dont rub?
DILEMMA!!!

Some have fitted the Scirocco Interlagos wheels, which are 8x18 ET41, although I recall reading that there can be front arch contacti ssues over big speed bumps. ET45 gives you 4mm extra clearance, but might still give problems.

8x18 et 48 , max for gti , i cheked many times on mk 5, mk 6

Mine are 8.5" x 19" ET52...they don't scrub if you stick to 225 wide tyres.
My BBS CH 025s are 8.0" x 18" ET50.
If std 7.5" x 18 are ET51,
Then 8.0 x 18" ET45 should clear and not rub....they'll fill the arches, but shouldn't rub.

Can someone please explain what ET sizes are all about. I'm getting GTD with the standard alloys but don't really like them and will prob change to 18s once need new tyres. What do I need to look out for in terms of sizing ?

7.5 or 8 inch wide, ET between 41mm and 51. Nearer to 41mm looks flush on the back but sit slightly proud on the front however visually fill the arches the best. 51mm is factory but sit in a bit far visually if you're a bit of a wheel junkie like me. Maybe 45mm is the best popular sized compromise using 225/40/18 tyres.
235/40/18s are a good width to protect the wheels from kerbs if using 8 inch wide wheels but do tend to stick out a bit when using a low (sub 48mm) offset on the front.
If you're a bit uncertain about about what offset and ET is all about have a quick google as there are some excellent guides online which explain in simple terms far better than I could attemp to type out. In short the lower the ET number the further out the wheels will sit in the arches. Go too far one way or the other and you will get either wheel arch liner contact or suspension or brake fouling. Wheel width will also have an obvious effect on how much offset you can get away with.

You may also want to read the mk5 section as there is a screw holding the arch liner that can be cause problems with different ET wheels. It does not seem a problem on the mk6 but canbe on the mk5.

Out of interest as I fancy getting some BBS CH's alloys at some point down the line but do the BBS wheels poke out on the front and the rear.

BBSs tend to come in 8x18 ET44 Martin, so no, they won't poke out on the front.
Here's my old ones:

Thanks Andy and what size tyres did you have fitted on those alloys?
p.s. I'm looking forward to seeing those CK's in the summer. Are they new alloys or brought second hand for a bit of a refurb project?

225/40/18s Martin. Contis all round.
I sent you a PM about the CKs back along Martin, at least I sent it somewhere! Maybe it's lost in cyberspace. They were second hand but in excellent condition.

They don't stick out at all...they fit properly. They don't catch or scuff, even on full lock, on a lowered GTI. BBS CH025s.
