Title: what other things to do to make her run smooth
Post by: the_stink on 09 December 2010, 17:24
So after a full Major service has been done (which i really need to do) what other things would you do to make sure she is running at her best?

I think for the time being im just going to concentrate on getting her running / stopping / handling right

so will be looking into the mkiv brake caliper conversion, any suggestions on ARB's or any other things to consider?

Im going to be cutting back on the amount of money I waste on booze and would rather spend it on the car as I can actually see it going to good use!

Unless you have a complete history of what the previous owner did and when, I'm in the school of thought that "it may not be worn/broken now, but at least I'll have peace of mind if I replace it now".

Granted a wheel bearing is unlikely to fail, and I can easlily be shown to be worn (wheel wobble) grinding noise etc..

But it's one of those jobs that is a bit of a potch - particularly with rusted/siezed nuts.

I would say leave it until you are doing the brake calipers, but If you wan't to get as much stuff out of the way in one go, then do all four at the same time,as you may as well do the front as well.

Jonathan.

How long do you intend to keep the car?

Mines a keeper, so all the stuff I change/renew means "I know" my car.

The bits that make it go, turn and stop are the more important.  So if you can Blitz the car and do a big whack of jobs in a few goes, it means you have piece of mind for a good few years.

Mechanical first, cosmetic last.

Well im not going to sell it anytime soon so, as much as i do get fed up and pissed off! I just need to get on with sorting the things that are doing my head in and all will be fine!

But as you say the running and stopping are first then can look at how much i need to fork out to sort paint etc

Oooooo waht you go in mind? I do need to buy a Trolley jack, axel stands and a breaker bar as my friend has these and i do not so need to invest in some!

If I had some spare cash I'd be concentrating on new suspension bushes all round. Cheap enough to buy but a PITA to fit

256 brakes are enough I reckon for a road car as long as they are in good condition. Braided hoses would be nice though

No trolley jack? First purchase right there.

Bearings can be a lifetime component, don't change them unless there is signs of wear. Change them in pairs, there is no need to change all 4 if they don't need doing.

Don't polybush anything if you value your comfort.

Stick to genuine/oem parts for longevity and comfort. Some consumable service parts should almost always be genuine/oem - ball joints, top mounts, bearings, bushes, seals, gaskets, coolant, oil filter, fuel filter, fuel pumps, dizzy, coil, cv boots,

Other consumables can be any make/model - brake disks, brake pads, spark plugs, oil, air filter, leads, dizzy cap, rotor, gearbox oil, timing belt, aux belt, waterpump, pas fluid, radiator, matrix, bulbs, clutch

Keep an eye open for the following OEM brands

Lemforder
Continental
Mann
Elring
Bosch
Dayco
LUK
Sachs

fandango setup on the k jet.

you can waste a day pissing with it but sometimes yeilds massive rewards.

check spray patterns, replace injectors if there off.    measure flowrates of each injector and adjust the mmetering head so they all match across the board,   check system and controll pressures as well as WUR function for full throttel enrichment

Don't polybush anything if you value your comfort.

Done it to 2 golfs now and it makes very little difference to comfort IMO. FYI, go for the Ebay special kits if your doing bushes, sooooooo much cheaper than polyflex its unbeleivable and the quality is good enough to last (except the front strut top mounts).

Not Often I agree with Ben

But I have to agree with him on this - Stick as much as possible with OEM or OEM Makers stuff...  Buy OEM and only have to buy once... Buy Other Stuff and look to replace it within a year!!!

Poly Bushes Stay away from IMO..

I would also suggest looking at fitting Eibach ARB's if what your looking for is better handling... I have fitted mine & well impressed & with them being under the car you can still keep that OEM look but get the benefits when driving...

Treat any rust you see on the car, otherwise itll end up a rust bucket like mine

The obvious timing and COs should be checked to get it to run smooth. And like said a compression test can either bring piece of mind or an absolute headache but worth looking at.

Tis the Very Same Stink

Slowly but surely doing things as and when money permits or things just break and have to be fixed  got a project thread going so you can see whats been going on

Think a compression test will be worth a look and as said can then look at sorting any problems out once and for all, or for as long as they want to stay fixed!

I got a pair of 2 axel stands and a 2 ton jack for around £50 from halfords, Trade card FTW
