Title: Bargin Mk3 8v
Post by: ju571n on 08 December 2010, 18:58
So i thought it was about time to put some pics up..

This is the car as i bought it for 4months ago
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/golf/Picture095.jpg)

Yea aright i know that front end looks gay but it didnt saty like that to long

Right its a 1993 8v gti, 130000miles full, mostly vw, service history. Just had the head gasket done, head skimmed, new plugs and leads etc.. Alloys lowered on shocks and springs... 4months MOT 3months tax  £500

So on getting the car home i discovered it had a hold near the drivers side front jacking point. Got the car round to my uncles and we replaced the entire sill and half the floor pan, decided to check the passenger side and found a bit of rust, so stripped it well back and replaced part of the sill and most of the floor pan, oh and the rear nr side arch.. put a whole new arch in. Sealed it all and painted it al up, so so far the bill stands at about £100 for the metal and sealer and paint etc.

Right then discovered it needed:
Thermostat
Drop links
Bottom ball joints
And threw in some track rod ends for good luck.
The sunroof leaked and didnt open
Standard air box to replace the poxy rocket looking cone filter.
Passegener seat tipping lever was broke
Fix the big crack in nr siide headlight

Sowen about all these jobs, done al except the thermostat as i wasnt conviced it needed it but upon driving it, it does!

I then decided i needed some toys so ordered:
Coilovers
4-Branch
came with a decat in the boot
Stainless middle and rear sections
Subwooooooooofer
Amp big enough for the sub
New wires etc
New grille

So the jobs i then did:
Fixed the sunroof with some bits of wood,  the gearing that the motor meshes with was forked and decided with it being winter, bodge it shut for now!
Fixed and Painted the headlights
Painted the grille
Put the shiney new bits on
Fixed the passeneger seat with some genious intuition.
ANd finnaly got round to building the new system

And heres what it looked like before its MOT
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/golf/Picture223.jpg)

Also washed it and decided to clay and quickly polish a small patch to see what i had to work with.. I was quite impressed with this
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/golf/Picture181.jpg)

The car is now up and running and on the road with not too many problems...

Jobs in urgent need of doing:
Change thermostat cus its bloody freezing driving to work at 5.30am
Smoke side repeaters and indicators/fogs

Wil try and get some new pics of how she looks at the minute and maybe asneaky peek of the yet unfinshed install.

Any feed back would be great, let me know what you think. Oh and i warn you, i am not easily offended!

Cheers Justin

Thanks for all the comments chaps..

Didnt get any photos today as it decided to rain

But heres a couple of pics I found on my phone..

Here she is the week before i put it on the road, with its predecessor.

And here she is covered in snow after polishing and putting the plastics back on
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/golf/Picture226.jpg)

I've left it that high at the front as there is loads of massive speed bumps up here where I have moved to work, so just wanted to see how it coped, But the good news is, it can go down a little more yet.

Here's whats nestled comfortably in the boot

That's all for now

Title: Re: Bargin Mk3 8v UPDATED WITH LOTS OF PICS
Post by: ju571n on 19 August 2013, 10:54
Right big update. Get a brew.

I may not do so much writing, I’ll see how annoying organising these pics are.

So it’s been nearly three years since I updated this and to be fair I have done quite a lot. It stayed as it was in the pictures above for a little while. I’ve done loads of things to this car and I have touched just about every part of it I’m just useless at taking loads of pics but heres what ive got.
Then I did a BMW 1 seriers rear wiper which was pretty cool. I then got some clear front indicators. Then I found a Vento front at the scrappy, £50
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_0388.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_0388.jpg.html)
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_0465.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_0465.jpg.html)
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/photo-6.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/photo-6.jpg.html)

I then got around to doing a bit more of the boot build. Then the indicator and fog blanks got tinted.
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_0480.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_0480.jpg.html)
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_0592.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_0592.jpg.html)

Then exciting things happened, my cousin was selling his wheels, so I snatched them off him and tried them on for size.
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_0610.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_0610.jpg.html)
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_0605.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_0605.jpg.html)

They needed some fettling, new tires, had to pull the arches quite a lot and played around with the camber. Then they sat like this for a while. Well happy with how it looked.
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/photo-10-1.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/photo-10-1.jpg.html)
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_0736.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_0736.jpg.html)

Then I eventually trimmed the boot up.
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_0739.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_0739.jpg.html)

Then after a faily boring 6 months the engine sh*t itself just before xmas  2011. So instead of wasting any money fixing it, I bought a 80k lump from a Corrado. But whilst fitting it, I decided I wanted to clean it up a little bit, stripped it down and painted it and added a kent cam and had the flywheel lightened. Heres a few pics.
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_1405.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_1405.jpg.html)

I also found this hole which wasn’t cool, as I have no welder and now power in my garage even if I did. 
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_1445.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_1445.jpg.html)

I had to get the car to my new house as we moved, got it there and pulled my finger out to get it finished. Got it done and had the wheels refurbed. Stuck them back on and got it sitting a bit nicer.
(http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/Justin_Coulson/IMG_1630.jpg) (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Coulson/media/IMG_1630.jpg.html)

More to come soon. I need a brew now. The next part is the interesting bit.

Heres the fun part.

Got bored with the car so before xmas 2012 I took the car off the road and pulled the perfectly serviceable engine out to my dads disregard. So I pulled the engine and took it to bits, I degreased cleaned and painted every part, whether or not youd be able to see it once refitted.

I bought a trick head off DH. Its and AKL head of a 1.6 A3. I bought it because my plan was to go bike carbs. This head being crossflow making my life loads easier. Specs: Mild port and polish inlet and fully gas flowed, hi flow valves with a triple angle cut, hd springs ti seat and retainers. This was a kit from America costing around $500. So this got painted too.

I bought an adjustable pully. Got a manifold made fitted my carbs which I won on ebay.

Right onto the bay, I stripped it completly and spent so many hours with a wire wheel in a grinder stripping sealer. We then towed it to a mates workshop where we set about welding and smoothing. Here’s pics of that lot.

During the time it was at my mates it gave me time to paint my new subframe and wishbones. I painted all the chassis equipment upfront, if it was replaceable it got replaced: New subframe, wishbones, polybushes, steering rack, steering arms, rod ends, ball joints, roll bar links, roll bar bushes, top mounts, hub bearings, engine mounts.... yada yada yada. If it could be changed, it got changed. Well worth it may I add, its like a new car now.

Looks awesome, on the passenger chassis leg how did you go about smoothing it all, on mine there are a couple of places where the metal drops down but dont just wanna fill it with filler.
Really wanna come have a look in person to get ideas on mine, youll have to text and let me know of any local meets that youre off to.

This is the area i mean

I think it was filled matey. We didn't have a clear image of how we wanted a good we started so just rolled with it. If I did it again I would run plate through to the back edge of that that low bit.

Don't know about any shows mate as I work away. I have get to them if I happenn to be home. Hoping to get to players in it. People are more then welcome to come ask there.
