do your interior lights come on when you open the door? Do you electric windows work?
Quite possible you've blown Fuse 14 and it needs replacing

Yeah it does, i will check the fuses

So the windows and lights work ok?
Then its not the fuse I've suggested; sorry

 just went out and checked them aswell! just seems a bit odd that when i went out to wire in the the head unit it was fine, the wiring for the stereo should not have an effect on the fob should it? as i say it works fine off the key

I've heard of instances where this has happened but I can't remember the solution :undecided:
It will obviously work using just the key. What I was asking is if the lights and electric windows still work as normal. If they don't then its deffo the fuse. If they do work then its something else

Cheets will have a look at the thread, as per having the stereo on a permanent live, i wouldnt have thought that would bare any significance to the key unless there is some kinda module behind the stereo which i could have knocked or something, i will have a look at the thread and see if i can brave the cold to have a look! I lovr my golf but its just to cold to be outside lol

Sounds like something is connected to the K Line (diagnostics line) hence why your remote has stopped working
