it all started over a week ago just as the big freeze and snow arrived. Woke up early one morning about 3ish for call of nature and thought i'll look out the window and see if its snowed!! Anyway just happened to look at the golf on the drive and it looked like the rear lights were on, thought that was strange went downstairs picked keys up and pointed them out the window to unlock and lock it, still on. So went outside and had a look and the brake lights were on  hit the brake pedal a few times and they went off, they weren't stuck on earlier when we used the car cos i'd been in the boot and it was starting to get dark so i would of noticed if they were on. Never had that happen on a car before were the brake lights just ramdonly come on whilst the car was parked up. So thought i'd keep my eye on it, been looking out the window at it last thing at night before bed and first thing when i wake up (530) its done it a couple of times since, though last week in the heavy snow the car didn't move for four days and it didn't do it then so its only when its bin used. Looked out the window last night they were on, went out hit the brake pedal and went off. Woke up this morning they were on, went out to it wouldn't unlock using remote, unlocked it with key no interior lights came on and had a very dim looking clock saying 0:00 went to start it and battery flat!!!!!! Not happy bunny. Anybody else had this problem or could think of the cause your input would be welcome

Could be a simple faulty brake light switch or a faulty earth. I had the same problem on my last car,not a golf but a hatch back & it was down to some of the wires in the loom rubbing together & wearing away the sleeving & causing them to ark together.
Auto sparkey sorted it for me & told me it was a common fault on hatch backs due to opening/closing the hatch & the wires getting worn.

Sounds like a faulty/sticky switch.

Had the same issue with just back lights coming on, on my 2005 GTI recently. Happened three times on very cold nights? Drained the battery on two occasions. Dealer found nothing on Vagcom. They changed the brake pedal switch as first guess, £8 plus labour. Been OK for the last 2 weeks. Hope this helps.

Faulty switch 100%

right, ordered switch from vw, a reasonable £8.57. Fitted it earlier and......... brake lights not working at all now, plus a few warning lights on the dash. And it get's worse my car is a dsg so brake pedal must be depressed before gear lever will move from park, it won't release from park now  Assuming I’ve got the right switch? (part no. S1K2945511RDW) it does look slightly different from the original but thought they may have just changed the design slightly. I mean the electric connector block fits and had no trouble fitting it, all lines up fine. Checked all my fuses - all fine. Have put old switch back on so I can at least move the car if I need to.

My golf is also DSG. Sept 05.
Invoice for switch shows V1K2 945 511 RD W.
Small difference but probably significant.
Exact cost was £8.38 two weeks ago.
