Title: Suspension
Post by: CraigDavieBeattie on 06 December 2010, 18:45
Hey guys, right after getting myself some redline JOM coilover set i am now wondering what are adjustable drop links and do i need these too? Ive had coilovers on now for about a month and a bit and there great, sits around 60-70mm ish down so looks good. Haven't a clue about suspension so thought i'd ask here which i guess its for lol. Also these ARB's? Anti Roll Bars am i right? (total clueless btw) do i need one of these? why? and what does it do for the suspension?

Also... The driveshaft which again i cudnt point to if i was asked. What do i need to do to stop this from failing/breaking?

Let me know guys. You haven't let me down so far lol. I would appreciate in detail if u can and if u want a Gold Star you can add pics too hahaha.

it's down to you what you do mate, there are plenty of ways to do it. You can use adjustable drop links which might help but it seems to be a bit hit and miss. The other alternative is fit a different ARB. Eibach or Whiteline are options and also the R32/TT ARBs can be made to fit

Yeah but what do the ARBs do for the car mate? and do people actually fit both adjustable droplinks and coilovers? what about the driveshaft part?

you have a arb, the arb will hit the drive shaft at around 40-50mm drop, to get round this uprated arb will stop the hitting

http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=226673

the red bar you see is the arb, the bar underneath is the drive shaft, once lowered the arb wil rest on top of the shaft

using a upgraded one with no loop will stop hitting and go low low low

http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=223041

adjustable drop links may work but will only increase the height of the loop away form the shaft, they wear out quiet quick too!

hope this makes sense

haha well in the 1.4 i aint gona be going 90 round bends haha! not unless its downhill for a while! hehe. yeh uve helped a fair bit matey, understand the whole arb thing now. So the car has a standard arb yeah? and wud my drive shaft be ok right now u thinking or will i need to look into this? my mate works in kwik fit so i guess i can ask him to have a wee look and see if the drive shaft is marked or anything to show rubbing? wud that help? Sorry but im not used to the mechanics on cars so kinda learning bit by bit as i go along.

IIRC you have a little engine in yours dont you Craig, so im gessing you might have thiner drive shafts over us GTI boys.
You are right about ARBs = Anti roll Bars and the reson thay are in the car is to help stiffan up the Chassis. Some people take them off to go really low or like what Wazzzer said you can get diffarant ARB from Eibach or whiteline. The reson for puting these in is because the ARB goes over the Drive shaft, so when you lower your car the distance between the arb and driveshaft is made smaller, thus making potential contack between the two. The aftermarket ARBs have eather a bigger loop to avode this or that go under the drive shaft.
this is a Eibach ARB which has a much bigger loop compeard to standerd.

The drop links are used to conect the ARB to the wish bones. The ajustable ones can be used to make the loop a little bit more bigger to preven the driveshaft and arbs coming ito contact agane.

Thanks mate, Helped a lot. Both yourself and Wazzer have done me a huge favour as after reading up on many threads about people with lowered cars they were going on about all this stuff which i knew nowt about so mind at rest. Im still gona get my mate to have a wee look to see if they've been rubbing/knocking/hitting whatever u call it, that way i'll know which step to take next. Cheers.

While on this subject.. See a Strut Brace that goes under the bonnet. Is this also doing the same job as the arb?

Sounds to me you've been quite lucky with the 1.4, you'd usually know if it was knocking/catching audibly :)
