Title: New Michelin PS3's with added scratches to wheels! Now with Lepsons Refurb Pics
Post by: VWjon on 06 December 2010, 13:32
Had front two tyres replaced this morning £270 all in. Washed car yesterday and took pictures of imaculate wheels just incase. And guess what happened. Heres the before and after pictures! Since been back down to the tyre fitter and he has agreed to investigate how it happened, has onsite cameras apparently? and will ring me tomorrow. If at fault he said he would pay for refurb?

What you guys recon? I have phoned local VW garage, £460 for a monza 2 with tyre change over.

Not happy to be honest, first vw garages mess me about, then local places, im chuffin cursed i tell you.

Before, nice wheel:

After, new tyres with added scratches:

gave them a quick wash as soon as I got home (5 mins) then rang as soon as I found the damage. Drove straight back down. The scratches look like the wheel was dragged across something and not a typical kerbbing. I have date stamped pics after washing it the previous day.

They havent rung me yet.

Does this damage look like total wheel refurb or can the scratches be "cut out" as like with bodywork?

You maybe in with a chance if you contacted them that quick, next time you get new tyres allways check before you leave, also carry a bottle of detailer in the boot to clean the alloy's. I had my PS3's fitted last week told the guy before hand I will be checking the wheels for dents and scratches after. Hope you get it sorted though? It looks like laquer damage on the wheel?? Me thinks a refurb is needed! :undecided:

Wheels have been scuffed whilst braking the bead of the old tyres,
must have been dirt/ gravel on the pad which is adjacent to the press arm on the bead breaking tool
Simples :smug:

cheers steve, dino.

Proper put a downer on getting my new rubber shoes. He did say if they though they were at fault the refurb costs would be covered. Also that the company they use can do diamond refurbs no problem.

I will ring them tomorrow midday if I havent heard anything, im happy for them to do a refurb, though it it doesnt match the other alloys or im not happy I want a new wheel, simple as.

Update - The tyre company after me ringing them again is sending over his contact (refurb company) to inspect the damage. He is claiming he has viewed the cameras and said they cant see how they damaged the wheel.

sent pictures day before after I washed it (just in case something happen) and damage pics.

Maybe the mention of a small claims court?

What do you have to lose... you could also mention the ombudsman as well, so you could get trading standards involved if you really wanted to.

Best to keep it friendly but firm,
Had mine re-furbed by Lepsons last year so i can recommend them highly about £67.00 a wheel plus vat and carriage.
be carefull who he gets into re-furb them
if you agree stamp them before handing your wheels over.
Had a mate of mine who ended up with someone elses wheels back, luckly he marked them as the ones he got back were two
of his and two others were of the different Monza type / style with different lip profile.
There are only a few places that do them correctly with the cnc machine program
they get lots of the same wheels all in one place !

Update:

So after realising they have a big contract with my old mans company and the one I work for, things seem to be getting better.

They have arranged for their "refurb" guy who aparently has done monza wheels before and just invested in the latest machinery etc etc to do the job. we will see.

They want my car friday for a couple of hours, which I will stay around to see whats going on.

The wheel is going to be refurbed, so thats as good as admitting liability finally. if im unhappy with the refurb I want a new wheel.

Cheers dino for the tip on marking the wheel, whats the best way to do this?

booked in to get it done today, was 15 mins late due to traffic and the mobile refurb guy said he didnt have enough time now. Total joke.

Anyway hes had a look at it and said its a full refurb thats needed, 2 hr job. Said it may not look totally identical to the rear wheel as it will simply be "fresher" when refurbed, as the other wheels are older. My reply was all the wheels where replaced 15months ago by VW warranty for white worm so I expect them to all match.

Booked in for tuesday now, hes having the car so hes able to match the refurb with the other wheels. Im staying onsite to prevent any one taking it out for a "spin"

Hi,
just a cheap set of number stamps if you want to mark the wheels,
can pick them up fr less than a tenner from ebay of Machine mart etc..
similar to these:
http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/sp-69-4732-27462-draper-0-9-number-stamp-set-number-height-3-16%22.asp

good to see they are going to sort them out

vwJon you say that you got your wheels replaced due to whiteworm?, what is the criteria for vw to do this.  Thanks.

Hi phil,

When I had the car, purchased it privately 15 ish months ago. It was about a month away from expired warranty. The lady who owned the car had all 4 wheels replaced under warranty for the white worm. They didnt however replace the centre caps which had the white worm. I replaced those myself with my local dealer.

If the car is under warranty and its the factory wheels that have white worm / pickling then get your wheels replaced via local VW dealer. I have paperwork somewhere to prove this if it will help your case. Though I dont know how bad they were?

update:

Just got back from having the refurb done. Done a very good job matching the wheels. Refurb guy commented on the lack of lacquer on the orignal wheel (no wonder so many have white worm) suggested I get the rest coated with extra lacquer.

Anyway whilst inspecting the wheel under the heat lamp, there where a few 10-20 spot marks. The fitter / reburb chaps said to let the paint fully dry then come back in a few weeks to sort that out. If im still not happy have the wheel acid bathed and try again, but id ask for a new wheel at that point.

These spot marks are dust mite under the paint as the environment the work was done in wasnt in my opinion a "clean" paint workshop.

Will keep you guys posted. I do have details of the refurb guy, but suggest its done in a clean environment

At least it's a surface scratch they butchered mine on the lip of the wheel obviously full refurb but they won't diamond cut and laquer it'll be paint to blend on the lip  what you guys think?

not worries dtea, hijack all you want, this will slowly turn into a official tyre fitters knackered my alloy thread.

I wouldnt except that to be fair, they are admitting liability by fixing the wheel. Be calm and fair with them, but insist it has to go back to the state before the damage and match the other wheels. Mention a small claims court if you get nowhere and document all conversations etc you have with them.

For the sake of a £70 refurb the company wont want a CCJ on their record.

£70 for the diamond cut and relaquer? That seems cheap...did you dig out the thread by RedRobin about his Monza2s? I'll def have another word and to be fair the guys at te dealership are the ones ive used since 1994! Sure they won't give me too much grief

Yeah I asked the refurb guy how much it would cost if i'd have had to pay.

Wheel had old lacquer, paint and primer removed.

New white primer applied, then grey inserts, then smoked paint, diamond cut and 4 coats of laquer.

Lepsons cost about £68 +(vat per wheel)

This happened to me. I went to Protyre for two PS3's and they put almost identical scuffs in the face of the alloys. Either grit on the machine or they put them face down on the bench to take the balance weights off. Jokers. They denied it of course, and eventually the branch manager ended up calling me a c&nt and walking off. Won't be going back.....

No good at all jay, they paying to fix? or have you got to take it on the chin?

Update:

Anyway after settling down after the new year, I have since washed the alloy, not happy with the refurb, bits in the paint, a hair and grit stuck in from an apparently dry wheel.

Spoken to the tyre place, who reluctantly sent me to another refurb place, they have an account with lepsons. They took a look said they couldnt polish the bits out, so its off to lepsons as we speak. (2 week turnaround)

Tyre place footing the bill for another refurb, fingers crossed its done right and im happy with it. All this for some chuffin new tyres as the snow forced me to change them early, ironic as the car is still pants with new tyres on.

Final Update:

Right heres the pictures from the 1st refurb attempt (mobile van). He matched the colour very well, unfortuantly he didnt take 100% care in his work and sent me away with a semi-dry wheel. Resulting in grit dry in the wheel finish:

I complained in the new year to the tyre fitter, in which he sent me to another wheel refurb place. They didnt do diamond cut but had an account with lepsons and pristine. I asked for lepsons to do the work. 2 ish weeks later and its back. Very good work by lepsons:

After 2 months of something that should never of happened, im happy again, would use lepsons again, but not the tyre fitter.

This concludes the thread at least with a happy ending
