Hydraulic tappets on my sons car are very noisy.
Any solution to reduce the tapping noise will be greatly received.
Not a GTI question i know but lots of people here have had other engined cars prior to their gti's

only thing to do if you havent already is do an oil change mate
i have the same problem an im thinking of doing a engine conversion
-
try using a 5 30 oil for the next change and see if it helps
-
Replace the tappets

If only replacing hydraulic tappets was cheap !
His car uses loads of oil....about a pint every 1500 but thats usual. If start putting expensive oil in aswell (5w/30) that will only make the problem more expensive.
Its not too bad after the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature......sounds worse than a diesel while its on the way there. You know what teenagers are like ! and he's jealous of me now i've got an ED30........

you can get some stuff from any motor factors that is suppose to reduce tappet noise, not sure how good it is, worth a go, just wack it in the oil

5/30 doesnt have to cost more, but its a thinner oil so would reduce the tappet noise, however if your saying its losing oil then if you put 5/30 oil in then your gonna probably lose it faster. if your handy with a spanner you could remove them and leave them to soak overnight in a bowl of 3in1 oil.
are you sure its the tappets? are you getting blue smoke from the exhaust?

If your using lots of oil then you might have another problem.
