Title: Confusion over engine size to BHP (1.8 - 2.0) GTIs
Post by: mxgav on 05 December 2010, 14:07
I'm very interested in buying a MK4 Golf. It suits my budget at 20years old and affordable insurance wise.

I will just state what I have found to make it easier to understand:

1.8 non turbo GTI - 125BHP
1.8 T GTI - 150BHP
2.0 GTI - 115BHP

The 1.8T is £1800 on my insurance while the 125BHP model is £1200 while the 2.0L is £1300 but less BHP than the 1.8 Non turbo?

Pretty confused and looking for some help as don't want to buy a GTI and find it to be c*ap!

Cheers

The the only GTI to buy is a 1.8T
or you could buy a TDI 130-150 and get cheaper insurance/tax/running costs

avoid the 2.0, if your gonna be wanting more power eventually then spend the extra on the 1.8t, if you just want a standard drive then go for the n/a.

if left alone theres actually not much on paper between the n/a and turbo, its only when you modify that the difference appears

At your age and those insurance quotes it might be worth considering a diesel.
150bhp in the mk4 is crap if i'm honest.

Think I'll go for the 1.8 Non turbo version. What are the options and prices to get some more BHP out of it?

Urghhh!

I have an insurance budget of £1300 so pretty much turbos are ruled out. I am wanting to keep the budget less than £2000.

Ideas anyone. Also I need a towbar due to racing motocross which rules out a number of cars and why I am looking at the Golf in the 1st place

+1 diesel because they good for economy and if your travelling over the uk doing moto-x you need a cheap car with torque..

Avoid the 2.0 and as already posted might be worth looking at diesels.

Can anyone reccommend a good diesel model? I'm still looking for something with a kick! I've been driving a 108D Mercedes Vito for the past 2 years and I'm totally over vans for a while!

TDI 130 is a good choice.

In your situation perhaps look at either the PD130 or PD150,both would feel puchy low down.If you felt the need you could do a hybrid turbo conversion and get 225bhp+

Yeah i read up on that. Wonder what the increase in insurance would be?! I was amazed too see the 1.9 GT TDI has got 54MPG! to the 1.8 GTI haveing only 34MPG! That made my mind up alone!
