Just something I wondered, I aint got no gauges or anything to monitor boost but once up to boost it seems fine, however it seems "laggy" compared to a mates ko3s AUM and another pals ko4 TT BAM engine.. I know they're different turbos but regardless, does your ko3 (if you have one) spool very quickly? SHOULD it spool quickly?
I am off to r-tech soon for a TIP, 007p and a health check on the car but want to avoid spending more if poss haha :)
Cheers.
Dave :)

it should spool quite quickly.. they are not very laggy turbo's
-
r-tech good move!
-
It's a bit weird, the TT I mentioned is mapped to about 260bhp but it spools almost instantly. Custom Code map.
Mates ko3s has a stage 2 Revo map on (Golf, AUM).
Mine has a stage 1 APR map... but as you say with it being a diddy turbo you'd think it wouldn't be laggy. It's more noticable at lower rpm, if you're moving and are up the revs a bit it's not too laggy if you go off power then back on but... tis an odd one.
Hopefully R-Tech can advise me on a couple of things when I go get those bits fitted, they may help of course with spooling also :)
-
did you have it mapped before you fitted the k03s? i believe you need the ecu mapped to suit the turbo, probably be why your having issues
-
Mines running the ko3 mate... standard turbo, original too on 140k to be fair but no smoke or anything so.. hopefully it's not busted, it's always been like it in the 16 months I've owned the car in terms of a little laggy.

i should really read posts properly, lol
i know what you mean about the turbo difference, i noticed mines a bit slower than my workmates gti, i just put it down to the fact he had a panel filter fitted.
i know the k03s will hold the boost longer so maybe thats it?
-
Possibly...
Only stuff I've done to mine engine/transmission wise (the remap was done before purchase):
- APR remap (done at Awesome for 95 ron fuel)
- NGK Platinum spark plugs
- Pipercross performance panel air filter
- Custom "Stealth" hidden cat-back exhaust, non-resonated
Probably around the 185bhp mark if it's running right? As I say when I get some time off I want to get a Forge TIP and 007p fitted down @ R-Tech and them check it over. It runs well, odd how the small turbo has a bit of lag though lol.
-
I would say it is a characteristic of the map :undecided:
-
map = sh!t
-
I didn't think APR maps were renowned for being rubbish? lol
-
wel something is making your turbo spool up slow an cant think of anything other than the map.. unless sensor has gone..
-

+1 never heard anything bad
Topher is the man to ask about this thread
-
APR maps kick like a mule low down, and a k03 should spool noticeably faster than a k04. If you're lucky it'll just be a boost leak or a faulty maf or N75. If you're unlucky it'll be cracks in the turbine housing or dead actuator.. either way i'd say its something wrong with the car rather than the map.
-
Let us know how you get on with this
-
Deffo one for Nick and the R-Tech boys to look at then. Time to get it booked in :D
Not sure where Topher is based, I'm about an hour from Leicester/R-Tech. Topher it doesn't kick HARD or anything, it seems very progressive all in all. Torque seems linear between 3k-5k, but thats just from my bum dyno lol
I reaalllyy hope they're open over xmas haha thats the only time I can wangle off and I've been wanting the TIP and DV for months!
-
Pull the top N75 hose off (the one directly opposite to the TIP) and see if it boosts any earlier. Don't rev any higher than 4krpm and put the hose back on immediately after testing. If it boosts harder its most likely a sensor, if it boosts the same it points to a leak or turbo/actuator issues.
-
good advice above..
-
I am completely unaware what I am doing under the bonnet apart from checking oil etc haha.. is it easy to get to, assuming near the recirc valve area with the pipes around there?
-
yeah between the maf and dv. Little solenoid with 2 thin hoses coming off it and an electrical plug. If you follow the hose coming from the side you'll see it goes straight back to a boost hose, so don't pull that one off. The top one goes to the actuator, so removing that bypasses all ecu/N75 control of the boost leaving it to spool as hard as the actuator will allow.
edit: you can also just clamp the hose with some small mole grips, probably easier that way if its still got the one-use vw clips on.

I will nip outside and have a look shortly before I pull bits off lol thanks for your advice though, I'll have to take a pic so one of you can circle the bit I need to pull off lol :)

The first thing to check with a 1.8T that dont spool fast is the cam timing, just a tooth retard will eat all the low down power. The cam timing can be out because of poor fitting or the cam belt being stretched.
The next thing to remember is that your running the lower 95 ron map, which will have a lot less ignition advance and the peak load request (boost) will be a lot lower vs a map wrote for 98 fuel.
So by disconecting the N75 valve to allow the turbo to boost into oblivion is only really going to show you that there is more head room for boost, which I am 99% there will be. What yo need to do is find someone with vagcom who can log the requested/corrected and actual engine ms boost/load request and N75dc%, once you know what the ecu is asking for and how hard the hardware is working to meet the requested values, then you can start fault finding.
If you was running a map for the higher ron fuel then I would expect a huge kick of power down low along with some more risky advance, but a map for 95 ron IS going to be held back to reduce peak cylinder pressures.
Your only 35mins from us up the A444, If you give Pip a call on 01455 671233 and tell him Nick said book in for a quick logging session for free.. He will demand you bring hobnobs with you..lol
By having a logging session you will know whats going on and the way forward if any, so your not wasting your time trying to fix fault that aint there.
-
lol that sounds good to me :) I want to book in anyway for a TIP/DV, messaged you about it previously just that works been hugely in the way lately. What are your xmas opening times? I'm off between xmas day to jan 3rd so was wondering if you're open that week on any days as it'd be ideal nip down for the full check up anyway and of course logging sesh and to fit a 007p if not the tip... can always come back for that once we know if I need spend cash elsewhere however.
I will bell the office as soon as I can aswell actually :)
-
We have not booked any time off yet for xmas, it seems Pips just booking the diary up solid..
With the work load we have on I think we will only be closed half day on the 24th and re-open the 29th, finish half day on the 31st then re-open Monday 4th Jan. But we might do half days on the 27th and 28th dec and 3rd Jan just for remaps only. If you drop Pip a line we will get you a day sorted.

  busy busy busy..
-
Very busy indeed! lol I will bell Pip up one morning this week to see what we can sort out. I will leave the TIP for now and get an 007p and the check up/logging done, save you some time :D Can nip back whenever for TIP.
Cheers Nick :)

Your best bet is leave the TIP for now, and spend the time making sure the car is in tiptop condition first then you can start spending money to to enhance the performance without it being a waste of money and effort.

007p one comes up in classifieds every week or so..
-
May aswell get R-Tech fit one for 85 with the correct spring :) I don't know what I'm doing messing with cars lol.
Yeah I think I'll get the recirc valve anyway whilst I've got a few quid Nick and leave the TIP for the time being :)
