Title: A wee winter tyre tale...
Post by: Ess_Three on 03 December 2010, 16:33
Today I drove to a nearby town. The roads were white with the occasional dark/brown strip where tyres had run.
It was -4.5 when I left the house, -8 at my destination, and -6 when I got back.
I had no traction or braking issues the whole way there (17 miles) and back.

In fact, I tried to see how much grip there was available: I was able to use half throttle easily, with little by way of traction control cutting in.
I was able to brake pretty damn hard and pull up straight, and smoothly, with barely any ABS activation.

Oh, and the snow was deep enough to be using my front spoiler as a snowplough most of the way there, and back.

Winter tyres are ace. I have a set of 4, by the way.  :smug:

Ditto - I did the same this morning in about -8.5°C with loads of snow and ice and it just kept motoring through. No grit in evidence and plenty of grip available. Only snap throttle seemed to provoke any wheel spin. The snowplough front is my only worry now, especially as the snow starts to freeze. With 4 winters on it feels safe and predictable

Just put my winter tyres on my ML as well. GTi is a company car so cannot change them.

Difference ( even with 4 wheel drive ) is night and day.

I must admit though that without forums like this I would never have known the difference or even that you could buy winter tyres in the UK. I had them on last winter and keep them on for my annual snow boarding trip.

When I tell people that I have put my winter tyres they stare in disbelief and confusion.

Feels like I have discovered something new !

Anyway they will go on every year from now on.

Post by: GolfTi on 03 December 2010, 18:16
The difference can only be believed by actually trying them.
I am amazed at the difference in traction and braking.
A large outlay I know but if you keep them for 3 or 4 winters then worth it surely.
What price do you put on safety anyway?

I've had a few people giving me stange looks when I've mentioned them but I think they are becoming more popular in the UK especially after the last few weeks..

How good are they on smooth ice? the reason i ask is cos the roads around my way are generally well gritted but on tuesday night i got slightly caught out, a short trip usually around 30 minutes took just under 3 hours due to very heavy traffic, the cause was a road with a slight incline had frozen over meaning very very slow moving traffic. no snow at all just thin ice.
Now i know that having winter tyres on my car would not of made any difference to the traffic but would they stop me slipping on a slight hill covered in ice?

They are OK..far better than summer tyres.
If the road is very smooth and the ice flat and smooth...then I guess nothing will grip.
But in the same way certain winter hiking type boots find grip on ice where a smooth leather soled shoes don't...it all helps.

Total cock up with my tyres, I am sure I ordered tyres for the 17" shadows which I'd been promised by a mate for £50, what I've got are 225/40/18V Continentals so I can't get the shadow alloys and will have to put these new ones on my monzas and hope for the best as I cannot be doing with sending them back and re-ordering, winter will be long gone before I get the damn things on the car.

I guess I will see come Monday how good they are on the snow and ice.

Darling, you have fab tyres and they are now very expensive and also very difficult to source.
You are going to fly around the moors. They are ever so quiet and smooth riding. Lucky lush.

How true Asker with 18's on even if they are winter tyres I probably will be flying around the moors (not in a good way).  Being fitted on Monday now as I had no idea where the locking wheel nut was yesterday, and by the time I'd taken out the dog's bed, the boot buddy and the dog guard to get to the spare wheel and tool kit the guy had another customer to do and was unable to finish me off.  To say I was hacked off is an understatement.  Have you got some winter tyres yet or are you not bothering?

18" winters will be a massive improvement - tell me if I'm wrong.
Less hassle too, just change the tyres twice a year and still use your Monzas.

Amanda, you have the very best Winter tyres for your Monza Shadows.

As GolfTi says, much less trouble swapping tyres over.

I am still in two minds. We don't suffer from your terrible conditions. (North Yorkshire is the worst hit, I hear).

Now that all the roads I use are very well salted/gritted, I find the journeys quite easy. In fact, there are hardly any cars on the road and my journey to work which normally takes 40 mins, was accomplished, each way, in less than 20 mins!

If I do buy, they will be Conti 830P 225/40 R18 V tyres. Like yours.

I just have to source them. They seem to be as rare as hen's teeth.

But that was last week.

Mytyres - what a bunch of timewasters. Got my Golf tyres through them and all was well, but I've been waiting a week for a delivery date on my wifes Yaris. I ordered steels/tyres and got an email tonight cancelling my order. Reason is the item is out of stock. Real reason is that they sold them to me for £80 per wheel and now because of demand they know they can get a lot more for them. I've written back saying they had a contract with me they should fulfill under the Sale of Goods Act, but in reality I don't know where I stand. Bunch of barstewards!

The terms and conditions usually have in them that the contract is binding once payment has been made.
Most companies changed their procedures due to mis-pricing of goods in the past on internet sites, when some lucky punters were getting LCD tv's and the like for pennies because the decimal point was in the wrong place.

So it probably depends if they actually took payment or not?

After reading this post and the other epic 39 page thread on Winter tyres, I placed an order with mytyres for some Kumho 225/40/18's on 28th Nov. Didn't hear anything for a few days so I phoned them up. I was assured the order was 'in progress' and the tyres had been ordered from their warehouse wherever that might have been!

Anyway, just got an email from them saying that they are now out of stock and don't know when they will get more although they can offer me some Nankangs as an alternative. Interestingly, the Kumho's are still on their website but they have now jumped up by £60! I can't prove it of course but I think they're pulling a fast one.

I've cancelled my order because I don't like being messed around.  I know there is a surge in demand at the moment but the way they're increasing their prices on a daily basis is taking the mick!

Fitted my winter R32 wheels yesterday that i had on last year with the vredsteins on and i forgot how good they were, trip to the garage was slip sliding allover the place, but the drive back just fills you with confidence (£20 to swap at local garage )

i have been out all day in the mk6 and were cars are getting stuck and sliding the GTI just takes it in its stride   parked up in deep slush and ice where nobody dare park and when i came back started her up slipped into drive and crawled out without any slipping whatsoever,

i came back home and had to go back out in my VW Transporter to pick something up and didn't realise how bad the roads were, van was all over the place on the same roads that i had just used in the GTI with no problems whatsoever,

Advice to you that are thinking of fitting winter tyres is that.....it is a must.

The winter tyres are on  Continental winter contact 225/40/18.  Drove back from Whitby Tyres and Exhaust on some pretty hard packed icy snow and there was none of the slithering around that had been obvious on my way there.

I hope to be able to test them more thoroughly in the morning when I take the route we did yesterday in a mates' car and lost it on a corner, admittedly he did not have snow tyres but executed a decent rescue manouevre from the hedge where we landed.

Overall I would say that driving on these feels a good deal more secure the grip is better and there is no wheelspin, but I don't drive like a lunatic, I drive to the conditions at the time, but the confidence is back that I felt I'd lost with the Bridgestones in the snow.

Another wee winter tyre tale.

Had a day off today to do the Christmas shopping.  Incredibly cold weather, so cold that salt is having no effect.  Absolute brass monkeys.  Siberia territory.  Decided to get as much as I could in the village rather than drive to a larger shopping centre.

Village roads that had been ploughed and gritted were hard-packed ice.  Parking was dodgy because of piled snow at the sides of the roads.  No trouble at all.  While I was parked in the main street I saw another car coming towards me, down a fairly slight incline, going sideways with its wheels locked.  Nearly hit the Co-op delivery lorry which was parked outside the shop.  Temperature then (midday) was -13C.  My car behaved perfectly, including letting me park it on what were basically piles of packed snow, and pull off again in good order.  I tried a sharpish braking manoeuvre at a low speed, and the stability was very encouraging.

By four o'clock I was fed up with it all and besides I'd just made the bookshop owner's day.  I stopped looking at kiddies' toys in the Post Office and decided to go home.  As I was opening the car door, a lad passing by approached me and asked for a lift home if I was going his way, naming a group of houses about a mile outside the village.  He'd been stuck in Glasgow last night due to the weather and was only then getting home, walking from the bus stop.  He asked me just to drop him at his road-end, because the road up to the houses was a bit dodgy, but I said "winter tyres rule" and turned into his road.  It was hard-packed snow with soft snow on top.  Drove like tarmac in summer.  After I dropped him off I had another of those awkward 7-point turns into piled snow.  No problem.  Going back down the side road the car was slithering and the tracking warning was coming on, because I think the tyres were basically coated balls of snow.  Soon stopped.  I glanced at the temperature read-out.  -18.5C.

Car is now safely tucked up in the garage, and God alone knows what the outside temperature is by now.  The sheer peace of mind, knowing that I can get out and about, park, turn in snowy roads, and get up the hill to the main road without sliding backwards, is just amazing.  When I compare this with the farce that was going on last year, which was making me wonder if the GTi had been a rash choice for a village 800 feet up in the Scottish hills, it seems like a different world.

Doing just fine on the new winter tyre set up.  However I managed last winter I'll never know, these tyres have tremendous grip and the confidence they have instilled in me is worth every penny of the £660 I spent on them.

Hi Amanda.

You always manage to post just as I am going to bed! Hmmm!

So happy that you have all the grip you need. You really need the best in your part of the world.

What a day. Forgot completely I had to give three hours of postgraduate lectures. Gave them with no preparation  and got a standing ovation! Blushed for the second time in my long life!

Then it took me two hours to get home as there was a major accident at the Chiswick Roundabout which buggered up traffic all over the bloody shop. Needed to have a spit (post nasal drip) but could not find a tissue. So, I very disgustingly had to lob it out of the car window. I unfortunately hit a cyclist with it right in the face. Serves him right for being too close to Wolfgang. He, luckily, did not know what and who hit him! What a shot!

As they say, when you've got to go you've got to go!

Nice and warm here in comparison.

Goodnight!

I suppose you had to be there.  There was no question in my mind but that the request for a lift was entirely genuine.  We were in a village with a strikingly low crime rate, the boy was obviously walking from the bus stop, he looked frozen stiff, and the temperature was Siberian.  Not to mention the fact that a little way further on anyone on foot would have been walking either in deep snow, or in the tyre tracks in the road.

Nobody with any decency would have turned him down.

Whatever is wrong with us Southern softees? A bit of snow and they get their knickers in a twist.
Southern fannies

Yummy!

Dirty boy

Just managed to get home after a few problems with other drivers not being able to get up a hill and blocking the road.

Did a 5 point turn (a problem for many of the other cars in the snow) and took a short detour up another less busy hill.

No bother.

There should be a law..

Most others couldn't even turn in the road. The 4WDs were OK and I think a few others had winter tyres.
The beemer drivers were all stuck scratching their heads.

There really should be a law..

My Pharmacist, whom I know quite well, has a new BMW 335d 4door Sport. He was all over the place even at 0.5 mph! Was sliding uncontrollably forward and nearly hit the car in front whilst trying to park. I was standing beside the car and saw the front wheels slipping away. Quite bizarre.

Next you'll be telling us it was an Auto.

It's amazing to think these excellent cars come from Bavaria where it is very cold every year.

Brilliant.
All the information you need.
I think there should be a law along the lines of:-

'if you are using unsuitable tyres and you cause an accident or blockage of road because of the unsuitable tyres' then-

A new topic maybe?

Do you wish to do the honours?
Do you think it will be moved?
Do you think you might have to lock it, eventually?

Your argument doesn't really hold weight. Whether you have winter tyres or not, if you cause an accident you will still be liable.

As for blockage, I'm sure we have all caused a blockage at some time. Mine being when my clutch cable snapped right on the centre of a junction!!

The problem with bringing in a law to determine the most suitable kind of tyres, where is the cut off point? Winter tyres are more suitable for temps below +7 (or there abouts?) So what about these freak +10 days we get in January? Would drivers be expected to change tyres on a day to day basis depending on the weather?

I totally agree that there is nothing worse about drivers causing accidents in the snow through carelessness but I can't help thinking those same drivers with "winter tyres" on will just push the boundaries and still continue to cause accidents.

1st November - 31st March.
That gets my vote. Hang on...that's pretty much what I do anyway.
