This is what happened to my old PS3 a couple of weeks ago, if you switch the system off from the switch on the back and leave it a minute or two then turn it back on it should boot up again but it wont last long.
If it beeps 3 times and just shuts down straight away and stays with the red light flashing it means it is overheating so I read online. After mine did it for the first time it lasted a week before it did it again and then it started getting more frequent until finally I got the yellow light.
It's happened to a few of my mates in exactly the same way unfortunately. Start saving

cheers for replies

right for anyone else who is interested... i found a possible fix to this common problem with the ps3.
Involves ripping it to bits and using a heat gun on a few bits... which apparently solves the problem. I will be giving this a go later this week so will report back. I also spoke to a friend who had the same thing happen and he fixed his with no reoccuring issues.
fingers crosses... im pretty poor at stuff like this so if i can, anyone can!!

i repaired a mates ps3 (one of the shiny ones) earlier in the year with the option of buyin it as they bought a new one, thing only lasted 3 days, repaired it agen but that lasted less than a day
-
Yeah, the repairs don't last long unfortunately, best bet is to buy a ps3 that needs a new disc drive and swap the disc drive over.
Either that or send off your PS3 to somewhere that give a 6month warranty on the repair

what repairs did you carry out?
-
This happened to me last nite, bought a new one today, so stripped the ps3 down to get mw2 back out of the disc drive, pretty easy done so im gonna get a heat gun and try the repair. If u do repair it, take it down to game or something and trade it in while the repair still works... as long as its working at the time they will take it off your hands. its their problem after that.

i did plan on getting rid anyway.. ordered a new one which should be here this weekend!
took it all apart ready for repair today hopefully
dont know anyone that wants to buy a ps3 do ya??

Sell it to a computer game shop, as long as it turns on and a game loads they take it. Let us know how you get on with the repair. What stuff did you buy to do it?
-
wen i did my ps3 i used stuff called arctic silver themal compound (best stuff to use) which is like £10 for a 10mm syringe , in the youtube vids it shows people spreading the stuff over the 2 chips but the bloke in the computer shop i bought the stuff from said you dont need to spread it, just put a pea size amount on and rebuild it as the heat will spread it evenly

i couldnt get the artic silver stuff but used the alskar (sp?) stuff.... it works is all i know. Happy Days are back!!!

Can you tell me exactly what you used please mate and where you got it from? I might aswell have a go at repairing my old one and either selling it or keeping it as a spare

Cheers, I actually got the yellow light in the end after the flashing red light error.
What exactly do I do with it then, just take ps3 apart and put a dab of this paste on the chips?
I bet there are a good few video guides on how to do it
-
there are ye, u also need a heat gun with a at least 350 degreestemp setting which is the heat u want (my heat gun is 330 but i heated the chips a little longer to compensate)
a computer repair shop told me u dont need to spread the acrtic silver as the pressure from rebuilding it and heat from the console will spread it, just dab it on the chips pea size amount (the vids will show u the ppl spreading it), bearing in mind mine only lasted 3 days and then less than a day but i guess it was pretty much beyond repair before i got it

do you guys know why you get the YLOD?
After much research i found out that the reason behind the ylod was the soldering on the CPU GPU was melting, the solder is LEAD FREE which has a lower melting point. After some rules and regs in the europe and other countries, sony and other big manufactures have stopped using lead solder (lead solder has a higher melting point). and are now using LEAD FREE based solder. the best bet is, find a local repair shop that does REBALLING (these are the tiny solder that you get on the processors and all the tiny componants on circuit boards) & ask them to use LEAD solder (on the side jobie). Smeone around your area will do this for you, it shouldnt realy cost more the £50 for reballing (thats if you have stripped the board out yourself) £50+ if you havent taken the board out. And then after the repair has been done make sure you get a recipt as some people offer upto 6 months warrenty. I have 3 ps3 (old/fat) waiting at home and will have the board REBALLED this will stop the ylod. Because the games are so fast & graphic intense the cpu & gpu get VERY hot which cause the solder to melt then you get the YLOD or RROD. Oher thing i would advise is to get on of them cooling fans (EBAY) with as many fans as possible, which in the long run will make your ps3 last longer.
Hope this makes you understand better,
if i am wrong please correct me
if you need any more info just pm me always happy to help
sharki
p.s youtube ps3 reballing and you will see what they do to them.
also the heatgun fix is a temp repair!!!
-
yep.. it appears the heatgun repair is a temp fix!!
Was playing gt5 last night and it turned off on me again. On closer inspection the PS3 was pumping out some SERIOUS heat. Tried playing it again a few times and it did the same thing but I was able to turn it back on.
I then switched to Pro Evo and played for an hour + with no problems what so ever.
Without a doubt it is GT5 thats causing the PS3 to over heat!!! :embarassed:
-
TRUST ME some games out there kill the graphics chip (baking hot) so the solder melts on them, best bet is get the board reballed with LEADED solder balls and you shouldnt have any probs! other thing i would recommend is get them 3fans that you can plug on the side or something too keep it cooler

where can i find these 3 fans??

also the fact that ps3 uses a low rpm single fan means it cant get rid of the heat quick enuff, ive taken both the ps3 and 360 apart and think the ps3 is probably the worst design for cooling because iirc the fan sits under the motherboard and it collects a huge amount of dust inside the console

thats a good point. mine wasnt anywhere near as bad as some of the pictures seen on the net.. but bad none the less.
found a good fan on amazon that is rated quite highly... unfortunately it is sold out. :undecided:

ebay my man http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=ps3+3fan&_sacat=See-All-Categories (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=ps3+3fan&_sacat=See-All-Categories)
one that i say get is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-PlayStation-3-Cooling-PS3-Fan-Variable-Speed-/330509087690?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN&hash=item4cf3e073ca (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-PlayStation-3-Cooling-PS3-Fan-Variable-Speed-/330509087690?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN&hash=item4cf3e073ca)
i keep my ps3 up right
or a 4 fan http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=ps3+4fan&_sacat=0&_odkw=ps3+5fan&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313 (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=ps3+4fan&_sacat=0&_odkw=ps3+5fan&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313)
but best bet is get the board reballed with LEADED solder and it will last over a year if you use it with the 4 fan (the more the fans the more cooler the ps3 will be)
