Title: Blocked heater matrix
Post by: TreadGingerly on 02 December 2010, 22:24
No heat again... well a bit of warm air that's as helpful as lighting a match in this weather.. Will water pass through the matrix if is sludged up? Had other issues during the summer, flushed the whole system including running water directly through the matrix. The pipes to and from it feel hot. The bypass valves have been done away with... Any ideas, I'm freezing !!

if blocked it can still pass a bit of water thru it, as there are loads of channels in parralallelell

Likely to be a snapped cable between the heater controls and heater box. You can get replacements from VW (or at least you could 12 months ago)

check the cooling system over as per the coolant guide in the maintenance section, in particular mkae sure the stat is fully shut when cold and that water comes out of the thin header tank hose when you rev it. though you might just find the matrix has a stubborn air lock, sometimes its taken a good motorway thrash to clear all the air out of the matrix on mine.

did you check all the flaps inside the airbox were intact while you were doing the job? if the foam falls off the warm air flap it wont fully shut and cold air can bypass the matrix

I've been thinking of replacing the matrix since the exploding thread. Seems like there's plenty out there, will be an after Christmas job now.

Ever since doing this job the inside of the car stinks... I thought I'd give it a bit of time to settle down... Film of something on the windscreen initially, that's stopped now.. But this smell...not nice, any ideas? Foam is still intact and seems to be making a seal where pipes pass through bulkhead.. I did use the cheaper matrix available from German and Swedish.
Oh...and it does get warm(ish) !

yeah thats the oily coating on the matrix burning off, you need to clean the matrix thoroughly before you fit to remove it. it will burn off though, eventually

Have you driven far with the new matrix fitted and definately got all the air out? It took a bit of squeesing of pipes and driving of miles to get mine fully bled. But if you have a new matrix and no bypass valves, you should have a hot car pretty soon!

this problem has come up again.

colling system has no leaks.

when giving it some on the motorway it gets warm. once slow it gets colder?

waterpump is new, thermostat new, engine temp never goes past the middle.
hope its not the matrix

have you checked that the heater flaps are in good condition ?

if not the heat level will be miserly and for some reason the temperature gauge will show a low level or not

move at all

take out the center vents; very easy to do ; shine a torch down the vents and move the control lever to

see if the foam on the flaps has perished

if so you need to sort them out ; see any of the guides to help you  ; its worth the time spent

I had a similar problem today, got the car out after 6 months in the garage and had no heat from the heaters at all,i put a new matrix in before she went away for winter so i knew that was fine,i solved the issue by disconecting the return pipe from the valve as it was not hot at all, firstly alot of cold water came out then there was a surge of slush and water then the water was so bloody hot it scolded my thumb so i did have a blockage in the matrix,i wouldnt advise what i did as it hurt ALOT but now its well toasty again
