The one I sold to Dom, here it is in the making for those of you interested in making one.
Made out of MDF, think it was 3 sheets of bendy plywood glued together in a former to make the curve.

NOTE:
I MAJORLY messed that project up when I thought I finished it. As you can see I made it rectangular, only to forget the boot is NOT rectangular. Anyway, after ripping off the cloth, reshaping and retrimming with new cloth, it fitted fine!
Velcro on the underside to stop it from sliding away round corners, and 2 aluminium tabs on the top to help secure it against the parcel shelf side support.

Is the sub in a box?
Looks like it's just attached to a sheet of mdf!
-
as above ^^^^
that must have sounded horrendous
the sub needs an enclosure to work correctly
-
Not in a box, some subs are made to work without backpressure.

Agreed....my JBL is just attached to the front of a sub box with the sides etc took off to fit where this install is sitting. Don't forget that the parcel shelf support and the boot trim kind of make a box themselves. Mine sounds good and is better than the two subs I have in a box in there.
-
sorry but that sub is not designed for free air use
trust me if it was in a box it would sound much much better
-
A su without a box is known as IB or infinite baffle. Not every sub will work like this.
If a sub is designed to be in a box there should be no air leaks at all (unless ported in which case the air will 'leak', well flow in and out actually) of the box. If a box isn't sealed it isn't built properly, no exceptions.
Is that sub designed to be run IB?
-
Troublestarter. Are you the same from TA buddy.
-
No idea! Cost me £70 for amp and sub.
-
What are those bits of metal attached to? The 2 bits showing at the top.
Shame you buggered up your parcel shelf, I have an mdf one you could have had!
-
i am indeed bi chi
-
that sub came out of an active enclosure and as such is NOT designed for free air use
so you've actually taken what would have sounded an ok ish sub and made it sound worse
-
The standard of the speaker and amp are not exactly high quality so I dont think it will sound any worse!
-
cheap or not it was in a specific enclosure designed for optimum performance
taking it out of a box and mounting it that way will make it sound severely worse
-
My cars only an 8v but putting diesel in it wont work.
Same principle above.
It's not designed to be in that environment.
-
nice idea, shame about the no enclosure, maybe dynomatting behind it may help a little?
also doesnt help that your sharing the boot air with the 6x9s, got air flow in all directions which surely with the sub having no support of a box wont offer any favours there either?
i like the idea though of stealth boxes and subs built into side panels to give maximum boot space possible, im not one for using up the whole boot space with subs, amps, etc, so i do like this idea
-
dynomat would make absolutley no difference to the sound in this case
you could definitely not class that as a stealth box more a stealth panel
completely useless and pointless
-
Whatever, it sounded pretty dam well. You can't really ask for much more, as Len said

They cost £70, not exactly top of the range

Think we've established that mate.
Not sure how that comment helps at all or is at all useful.

Well as we have some experts looking at this thread can they please explain exactly what the difference is bettween an enclosure speaker and a free to air one?
I have looked closely at both types and cant see any difference.
Also some enclosure speakers can also be have ported enclosures so whats the diference there?
-
a free air sub uses the entire boot area as a form of enclosure they generally do not have great power handling and the tuning will be very high which is not ideal for a sub
whereas a sealed box is as it is and therefore does not have specific tuning ideally the box should still be designed for the sub thats going in it not all subs require say 1.5 cuft of volume some require more some require less
a ported box is designed specifically for the sub in use and the porting tunes is to your desired frequency
-
Not exactly answering my question!
I was more asking what are the physical differences in the speakers? How can you tell them apart?
So with a ported enclosure how do you tune it? is it just the diameter of the hole or does there have to be a tube length in the speaker like a transmission line speaker?
-
tuning a ported box involves working with port diameter and length to gain the correct tuning varying ports have different effects on box volume etc
there are lots of variables between subs to determine the best use
always read the thiele small parameters to get the best results from the sub
free air resonance,bl (magnet strength) sensitivity all have a factor in how the sub best works
-
So none of the ICE "experts" know anything about transmission line then?
-
yes i do but if you want a transmission line box thats even more complicated depending on whether you want or have room for either a quarter of full wave length box
and what relevance does a transmission line have box to a sub being removed from a specifically designed enclosure and just mounting it on a piece of wood

Enough fighting girls
