Title: modded air box
Post by: ddubya on 19 May 2003, 02:49
had a great result today! :), about 6 weeks ago I got my second MK2 GTI 8V completely standard apart from a stainless system (no idea what make), sounded beutifull, smooth power all the way from low down, after a couple of weeks I thought I would put a performance panel filter in the air box to compliment the exhaust, very slight difference in pick-up. I had an 1988 8V before and had a K&N 57i on it and it gave it a noticable increase in power, so I got thinking if I run the cold air feed pipe into the air box through where the baffle is at the front behind the headlight and drilled some holes on the wing side (away from the engine) it should have the same affect as a forced induction kit. So I did it and it's better than the 57i kit I had on my previous golf. I know there is alot of contraversey as to whether induction kit's/filters work but I can honestly say I have noticed a big difference from a standard air box & filter to my modded air box and sports filter.

give it a try, im sure you won't be dissapointed! :o

Drilled air box and performance filters do work. Its a FACT! The main gain is mid rev range performance and throttle response. K&N RULE!

I do agree i have a Black 1989 GTI 8v golf... nice car! and of course a K&N is on..

Just a quick question, on your 8v's does your lose power between 5000 n 6000 revs only a little like.... if not then myn probabley needs a quick tune on the roleing road.

Thanks  ;)

Yep I would agree in that drilling my air box and fitting a K&N filter made my car (MK2 16V) more fun to drive. Its a first step into the world of modified engines and for what its costs it would be silly not to do it.
