still learning about the mk2 digifant but am i right in assuming that the tapets are hydrolic and should be nice and quiet :D well if there in great condition cause mine sound like ive got someone with a typewriter camping out under the bonnet. used to this on old cars but ive had a few with hydrolic tapets and they been nice and quiet :D long as there was plenty of oil in that is and there is plenty in the golf.

Should be hydrolic, don't worry if they are noisy at startup for a short while. Flush the engine thru with ATM oil flush and refill with Synta Silver & fit a new oil filter and it should quiet em down. If not you'll have to buy a new set, but they aint that expensive.

thanks think its have a new set at next service cause its been flushed and new oil put in few months ago and it wasnt noticed till i got the exhaust fixed and could actually hear them :S least i know they are hydrolic tapets

Do you know what oil was used? If its not the right type it can stop the tappets working properly. Synta Silver is recommended for MK2 engines, and its what VW will sell you! :)
Oh and do you know if it was a genuine oil filter, as proper VAG ones have a valve in them which makes the oil system perform better.
(Not sure what it does, I assume it stops the oil pressure dropping and keeps the head well supplied with oil?)

to be honest i dont actually know but they where from vw as i bought all the filters oil anti freeze clutch and middle box last october just remember it was expensive :S

Useful info guys.
I'm doing an oil change on mine in a few weeks and would have bought a cheapo filter from my normal autofactors had I not read this.
Cheers,

Cool well its definitely not the oil or filter then, sounds like you just need new tappets :)
The ones from GSF are apparently just fine, and probably alot cheaper than VW!
-
Wahay!
I just serviced mine and now the tappets have "increased in volume somewhat".
Oh yes, I used the cheapest parts I could get. More or less anyway.
All from a motor factor and cost about ?1 for the oil/filter/fan belt/plugs/leads.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR
