I've got a mark 4 1.9 tdi and i am getting really pissed off with it.Bought it off a dealer and have had nothing but trouble with it. Its a 99 model and since i bought it, it has constantly been cutting out,it sometimes starts again but more than often doesnt. Vw cannot make sence of it and im getting really hacked off. Does anyone out there shed any light on this or has had similar probs. Its no fun when doing 80 on the motorway and then for no reason just dies !!! Not only is it dangerous but no bastard knows what is wrong !!
A mate thought it could be something to do with the alarm system !!!
Any replies would be greatly appreciated !!

Don't know if this is directly related but this is an extract from honestjohn.co.uk about a common stalling problem on 110 TDIs :
"Some TD 110s had a problem of stalling while coasting to a standstill from about 15 mph in neutral. The cure was to replace the ECU, but if the car was a personal import out of its 12-month pan-Euro warranty, the owner had to pay. This problem now seems to be coming back on high mileage TDI 110s. VAG acknowledges a fault with the ECU (038 906 018 BM) and specifies an upgraded unit (038 906 018 GQ) at ?695.00 + VAT. According to VAG technical, this problem will eventually occur with all ECUs of this part number, so a second hand part may only be only a short term"
Might be worth asking the dealer about this?

I had the same problem on my Mk3 where it would just cut out...even on the motorway!!.....and would not start again straight away. The problem was with the ECU relay which cost me approx 10-12 quid, and the problem has gone.
Would get this changed first before spending loads of money....unless you're loaded in which case send some here!

I for your sake its not that ?695 jobbie how long you had it, cause if it that expensive surley you have some case to argue with the garage you bought it from!!??

Surely if VW know about it then they should fix it, surely they can't expect owners to fork out the ?600, its not as if golfs are cheap in the first place, is it!
