Title: steering rack --- how hard to replace ?

is  this much of a job for a   diy   job

any speacial tools or  " tricks "

I believe the subframe has to be dropped so not that easy.

Hard enough, you should search - there was a post for a MK3 recently that started with a faulty rack, and ended up with him selling the car!

To be fair, the garage misled him a little as I don't think in the end it was the rack but a hose.
