Hi All,

I am currently looking for a MK1 Golf GTi (preferably cabrio).

I plan on travelling to the UK to source one.

I am not familiar with the UK rules, regulations and associated "forms" when purchasing a car in the UK.
Also, what avenues are in place to ensure the car is authentic and not stolen.

Can anyone give me an overview ? Any other general advice would also be welcome.

Buying a second hand car has its pitfalls in any country, but buying one privately form another country is going to be difficult. I would suggest using the Autotrader website, or Ebay, and contacting the owner beforehand to get as much information as possible. A few cabs are for sale on the site, and at least you know they have been owned by enthusiasts. I consider this to be important with an older car, as cost isnt usually a consideration to someone who cherishes their car.
You will need to receive the V5 document, along with the present MOT certificate. You can also do a HPI check on a car to uncover any details about its past.
