Sorry if this is an obvious question but is power steering fluid for a mk2 standard? I noticed today my P/S setup is making a right racket in the cold weather (was fine yesterday) and that the on checking the levels the fluid level is low. Belt tension is fine. I'll flush the system some when but as a temp measure I just want to top it up.
Halfords is closest and they do their own brand or 'Slick50' which is cheaper. Anyone know if these will do as I need to get some fluid tomorrow morning.
Thanks

As long as its green it will do the trick!
I think the code is CHF 11S DO NOT BUY RED
-
Ah right, so it is specific then. The stuff in there at the moment is black
Not going to be able to see the colour without opening the container :undecided:
This stuff? (CHF 11S)

Ok, now I'm really confused as I've just read several contradicting views that say I should be using red fluid?
-
Red is usually auto boxes but what I'm saying is what ever you had before is more than likely to be Green stuff?
I've ran 8V 16V both on green and had no issues at all!
I use plain old Comma CHF 11S
What I will say is to drain from the pump and resivor and try and get as much of the old stuff out before refilling.
You find that the pipes might have got bits of seals in it due to the fluid being so old!

Righto, cheers clipperjay
So it's the expensive £15 bottle from Halfrauds I need then?
Just been reading as I have a late mk2 with a red cap reservoir I need the ATF stuff (Dexron II) as apparently the green stuff will leak past the seals? Never thought there would be so much debate over P/S fluid

same here - red cap so i have gone for dexron II

Well the book says ATF, I just checked with the Coma catlogue and mine (16V Square res) came up Green So As long as you drain the system well before you stick new stuff in?
-
Red cap = ATF Dex II
Green cap = CHF
Get it right, or it'll go wrong.
Only issue is that the reservoir/lid might not be original - so its totally hit and miss!
-
Also some Pumps are retro fitted!
Mines come off a Corrado and when I was inspecting the pump only green fluid came out of it hence the book said green on mine the pump had green in it and the only thing new was the lid which came off a red round. Guess I've used Green stuff instead :undecided:

generally mk2s use ATF, only the very late ones, G60 and some diesels had green. ideally try to match the colour to whats in there now, though no help if its brown
its mainly the rack seals which are the problem. can fit mk3 seals to the pipes, then either fluid can be used. tho i have seen some peeps notice their mk2 pumps were noisy on the green but fine on the red. mines a mk3 pump on mk2 rack and pipes, works just dandy on the ATF
-
Ta guys,
I spotted ATF stamped on the top of the reservoir so went for the Dexron 2. Seems to have shut it up for now until I can investigate where the fluid went when it warms up a bit!

hmm.
mine is a mk3 pump and is running on the dexron II (atf - red) as the rack is mk2. should i be using the green (hydraulic) stuff? system was flushed a month ago and had new DII put in, but it sounds like supercharger whine when cold :lipsrsealed:

I would assume red...

it should be fine on dexron II, i'm running the same setup as you on mine and its been fine for 4 years+
if its whining chances are pump is toast, if it was me id be down zee scrappy for another pump. before you swap it tho have you checked belt tension, need about 5m of deflection on the belt.

iirc the belt is fine, the whine is terrible for about 30-60 seconds after which it sounds perfectly fine :undecided:
dead pump?
-
is it deffo the pump and not one of the tensioners/alt?

I have the same problem... i dont have PAS though  :undecided:

I've got mk2 rack and pump (red cap res), 1st stuff I put in it was green, but it leaks from every join, and now I top up with red?!(All I got in the shed) So its brown atm. Mine also whines like a bastard, as if its supercharged, is that defo the pas then- was told it was cambelt tension, then got thinkin it mite be water pump?? Also is that the tension then -5mm? Cos I've got more like 10mm and it does slip a bit when wet/parkin on full lock...
-
Remove the aux belts one-by-one and you can figure out what is causing the noise.
-
is it deffo the pump and not one of the tensioners/alt?
yes as it groans more when you turn the steering wheel

mk2bal: drain all the fluid out and replace with red, you might have to top it up then drain again to get rid of the rest iof the green in there. you shouldn't mix the 2 types its not a good idea! if flush and refil with fresh ATF doesn't help then you prob need a new pump. deffo need deflection to be around 5mm, 10mm is too much as you now know because its slipping! on my mates mk2 we ran out of adjustment for some reason, so i had to swap on a mk3 pas pump pulley which was slightly larger diameter. a new belt prob would have solved it but where you gonna get one at 6pm on a sunday
chris: does sound to me liek it needs a new pas pump, but its a bit odd that the noise goes after a bit. maybe check the system over carefully for leaks and make sure its topped up. saw a similar issue and it turned out to be a problem with a leak/hole somewhere letting air into the system. the pumps make a horrendous noise if they run dry!

its dry stored and i havent spotted any leaks, buts its due a fluid level check so i'll double check the pas fluid level. seems to have gotten worse with the cold, im not sure if thats a red herring though!
