Ive got a Mk3 GTi 1996 AGG. It occasionally has a fault when everything on the clockset stops working when the engine is started. Speedo and rev counter dont move and both LCD displays go blank. Im 99% sure the fault is with the wiring of the car rather than the clockset. I did do a search but couldnt find any posts relating to this problem. Has anyone had this fault?
Thanks Jamie

Probably in the ignition switch then.
But worth taking the clocks out to check

Really? You think. I have had the clocks out. Checked all wiring behind and around clockset Made sure everything was secure. Fitted it all back again and it worked. Bit annoying really, I hate intermittant faults! Its done it twice now.

Sounds like an earth to me my gti did the same!

Did you cure your fault? What did it turn out to be?
Thanks Jamie

I doubt very much that the clocks have their own seperate earth!
-
well you would be wrong :P
the dash earths to the engine block somewhere, its one of the brown/white wires. rear corner passenger side on 16v, on 8v its on the front near driver side i think

Ah right! But I always assume that earths go to the body/chassis, didnt know there was any earths to the engine! :embarassed:
Oh well, also what's this about a dash sensor?????

yeah there are a couple earth wires to the head on the 16v, as well as the dash earth the ecu sensors all earth there too. take a look next time you under the bonnet, its in the far corner near the metal pipe. couple o ring terminals with brown/white and brown wires :)
dash sesnor? maybe mean dash temp sensor, which is the small black one on the side of the head with a red/yel wire on a 16v, nothing to do with op problem tho
