Title: Carb problem on MK 2 Driver
Post by: lozza07 on 28 November 2010, 10:19
Hello can anyone help please.

My mate has a problem with his Mk2 Driver, and as I have a Mk 3 GTI he has asked me for some advice.  Unfortunately my knowledge on carbs is pretty rubbish.

1991 1595 cc automatic mark 2 golf
  the symptoms are as follows,

it is difficult to start when warm

- when car engine is warm it hunts higher than 1000 revs and when I place into neutral the revs go above 3000-4000 then settles to normal idle, it feels unsafe to hold car on foot brake stationary.

- if hunting whilst driving along this can be temporary sorted by quickly pressing the accelerator/gas but now becoming less effective.

-She is now stalling when warm/hot after deceleration when I accelerate after, eg from motorway to b road or after stopping at traffic lights the car stalls and is lumpy and is difficult to restart, or,  can not be started at all, when this last happened  had to call the AA. They said the fuel gauge was not registering (I had over a 1/4 of a tank if not more) and managed to get her started but didn't idle very well so had her recovered. (N.B it is a mechanical pump) so not sure if this is connected.
- it is difficult to start when warm

-previously if I used a bit of choke then I could change the revs so  she didn't stall when accelerating but this is no longer as effective.

Has it got manual choke? I would suggest cleaning the carb out. Replacing the mechanical fuel pump and maybe a bigger inline fuelfilter to let some mopre fuel in. What carb is on it?

I think its the P2E.  I had one on my Mk2 Scirocco GT2 hand had loads of issues with it.

Carb icicng.  Tiny crystals of ice form when its very cold, compounded more by the cold air going to the carb.

Had it on my 1.3.

Yeah i think the weber is the best option to go... Due to most people not knowing how to deal with carbs (inc most garages)

Auto is the box I don't see how that would effect the carb dh
