Title: RNS510 retro-fit and DAB with RCD510
Post by: RickS on 28 November 2010, 06:45
Gents, I know retro fitting the RNS510 has been extensively covered, but I don't recall anyone mentioning the aerial.

When retro fitting the RNS510 does it require the shark fin aerial on the roof?

Can DAB radio be installed to an existing RCD510?

No you don't need the sharkfin, Darren (mortygt140) fitted mine so I know that for a fact, however Im not sure about the DAB module I'm afraid.

The RCD510 dabs have a separate dab aerial input on the back so I'd guess that it can't be retrofitted unless you get a new dab RCD510 and swap it out!

The RCD510 has the DAB built in so it needs to be a complete new RCD510 rather than an add on module.

Hi,

Newbie to the forum doing some searching... I currently have a RCD310 fitted with MFSW and MDI in the armrest and looking to upgrade to a 510 unit - if i find one from a Match which comes with DAB from the factory, what work is involved with getting it to work in my car?

Will I need to add a DAB module/aerial or is it worth giving a swerve and sticking to a non-DAB 510 unit? Reading the posts above I've managed to leave myself confused!

Thanks in advance,
Gareth

If you've got the DAB tuner all you will need to add will be a DAB ariel. They come in different shapes and sizes.
The factory ones vary too, some are on the inside of the glass. One I looked at on a Scirocco was in the offside rear side window.
An external ariel would give much better reception but would be a Royal PITA to fit and run cables round the car.
There are specialists that do this sort of retro-fit, they advertise in VW mags and maybe would tell you what they would recommend you fit.

so i've today spoken with someone who's a specialist in fitting stereo's and various upgrades... their response on fitting a RCD510 with DAB on it (as fitted in a Match) was : the radio would fit but the dab would not work, you require a new back window, antenna boosters and front to back wiring to enable dab.

i'll stick to a non DAB equipped unit then!

I wouldn't agree with them entirely. You can get stick on aerials that go in the front window, so could be run up behind the dash, inside the A pillar trim and to the passenger side A pillar bit of windscreen. It would be visible, but not that visible.
The reception probably wouldn't be perfect but probably wouldn't be awful either.

I've got a Pure Highway but I've never used it!
