Title: Well and truly f**ked off!
Post by: Mitching on 26 November 2010, 18:12
On the way home today, all was good but then I went to overtake a lorry, it felt weird there wasn't the usual power, hardly any pull  :undecided:
Then 2 minutes down the road it just cut out without warning, rolled to a stop and tried to start it again but nothing. All the electrics worked, turned the ignition and I heard all the usual whirring of pumps etc, but nothing from the engine  :undecided:
Matey from RAC turned up and I stuck it in 1st while he rocked it back and forth, it didn't move much and I could see the engine wobble when it went backwards.
He reckons it could be the bottom end seized
The top end was fine apparently
What would be recommended, get it fixed ie new bottom end or an entire engine swap (8v gti digi)?
I know a mechanic that can do stuff cheap for me, only charged £120 to fit the clutch.

Is the engine definitely getting fuel ?

Electrical fault around the starter motor, igintion area?

If its the bottom end seized then there is a mk2 breaker in leighton buzzard with a few lumps still in the cars.

Know the one?

How would I test for those faults?

I think so Mr Blue, I think theres one in Hockliffe that does German cars, and also Bennies (the garage in town) have had a few in the past.

Also been on ebay, few on there, one being in Wycombe where I go to uni and my sisters ex works at a breakers in Aylesbury, he's gunna have a look tomorrow so I'm spoilt for choice if it comes to it

You could always do it yourself. Complete rebuild that is.

Just follow the engine rebuild video for the 8v in the garage section.

Simples.  Then you know it's all good.

Put a bar on the bottom pulley and see if will turn over.

Sorry, thought this was Stink posting.....

Perfect excuse for a 2.0 bottom end.

Much easier to come by.

Cheers, will check it out, but I'm not really confident with that sort of stuff  :embarassed:
