Title: Clunky Gear Changes - GTi 5 Speed Auto
Post by: derwood99@me.com on 26 November 2010, 02:21
Hi Everyone from New Zealand!

I have a 2002 GTi 5 speed auto.   The gearbox has become rather clunky between changes, especially about town at lower speeds.   If I'm a tad agressive on the about road it's beautifully smooth but around town some changes can come with a thud.   I have reset the TCU (key on, foot down for 10 seconds then key off) and that has made quite a difference.

Having never owned an automatic Golf before, I'm not sure if this is normal for this model.

Can anyone offer any thoughts?

Cheers

Darryn

I was going to say 99.9% of our GTI's are manual.

Drain and replace the fluid 1st.

Check for old oil for any signs of metal or if it smells burnt.
