ive got a 97 p reg 16v golf and it wont start at first i thought it was the starter motor so ive unplugged the live wire and put a wire direct from battery to the stater motor and the stater engaged and car fired so im having to do this every time i wana go out (makes me feel like a pikey)any way i got a tester and theres no power going to the wire which is red and black so ive then checked it behind the barrel at key and located what i think is the same wire and theres no power there either so is there a fuse or relay for the stater.
why is there no power going to it.
please help

think its a common prob on the mk3 (its the ignition barrel)

is that a barrel or a new ignition switch

tbh i cant remember as my mate did his ages ago. think it was switch

you wont get power at the black/red wire, you need to put 12v to the black and red wire to trigger the starter. basically thats the other end of the black/red to the starter :)
to test if its a wire fault, simply bridge a chunky bit o wire between the red wire, and the red/black. if starter works, its the switch. if not, its the wire somewhere
