hi everyone, got a problem with my brakes on my mk 4 gttdi on on a o2 plate its started in the last couple of days the prob is when driving through back lane puddles and over small road floods the brakes will fail ie the pedal goes so hard you can not apply pressure on the brake pedal to stop its exactly like when being towed with out the engine running the brake pedal will be hard. i will pull over stop the engine for a min fire back up the brakes will be working fine again, what could be causing this problem can anyone help please!!!

Checked ur fluids mate?

Could be normal.
Brake Test
When you finally have passed the Flood, it’s time to test the brakes. Try the low speed and stepping on your brakes. If you do not stop, it means that your brakes damaged by flood waters earlier. Drain patiently and slowly. Way by pressing the brake pedal with your left leg while still maintaining speed with your right leg.

LOOKED AT THE FLUID IT IS AT FULL MARK BUT LOOKS A BIT DIRTY NOT LIKE BRAKE FLUID SHOULD BE
-
When was it last changed?
-
IM NOT SURE AS I HAVE RECENTLY BAUGHT IT BUT ON THE VW ADVISORY STICKER IT SAYS TO CHANGE IT AT 95OOO MILES AND THE CAR HAS DONE 97000 COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM ITS REALLY BAFFLED ME IV NEVER HAD THIS PROB WITH ANY CAR BEFORE

+1 could just be your abs coming on if it thinks its lost traction

As above could be normal.

im sure this not normal just driving down small puddle lanes and it does it, it does not feel as if the abs is on, the brake pedal just goes hard like the brakes have compressed like a generator im getting the brake fluid changed today to see if this is the cause in my opinion this is a seriouse problem and needs to be sorted before i have an accident!!.

Its worth checking the brake servo feed pipe. Sounds like you are loosing brake vaccuum. Not sure why it would do it when you go through puddles tho!!!!
-
yes this is really puzzled me why too!! cant see any reason why it would be doing this iv got a bloke looking at it tonight to see weather he can source the problem hope he can find a solution!!

changed the brake fluid and problem still pursists! bloke at garage had a drive in it but couldnt find anything wrong at first and thaught i was talking a load of s##t!! he finaly had the problem happen while he was driving it and told me its a f###ing death trap and to park it up streight away! so this is the point im at at the min now im not quite sure weather its doing it going through water now but its got this problem all the same he is going to have a look on monday to see if he can source the problem so hopefully i it will get sorted soon!! any more ideas would be greatly appreciated.

finally found the problem the brake vaccume pipe had a very small split in it right at the join of the exhaust manifold when tested it was still sucking properly but when driven trough water the mist from the water was sucked trough the split causing the brakes to fail bloody glad i have sorted it now!
