i always buy bosch matey, as with everything get the best you can afford.
the rating on the alternator is max current it will deliver at idle, nothing to do with battery size.
when you buy a battery you are looking for CCA ,cold cranking amps, basically max burst of current.
the rating AH means amp hours, how much energy is stored in total.
best bet is check tinternet or use search function on here,am sure there is a thred bout this.
good luck

Say no further. Awesome quality and comes with 4 years warranty, same as bosch.

what if i was to put in a VR6 battery? (680cca 72ah) bare in mind its only an 8v GTI that wont affect the starter motor or the alternator will it? dont realy want to be spending £40+ on the battery. my old man got a battery from the scrappys even thoe his alternator couldnt charge it properly, it still rang for a year prob still running now. so i think il pay a visit to the scrappys

ok so i have just found out from halfords (it was the closest) that the battery is "unserviceable" so he said that a new battery is required. I rang CAS and they said that the recommended battery for my 8v GTI is 470CCA and the max i can put in is 550CCA is that true? as i dont want to be getting more then 550CCA and burning out my starter. any advise on this would be helpful.

Thank you

the max you can fit is determined by the size of the hole

sorted got a battery from andrew page for £40 2years warranty and its a drivemaster 550cca all good now. i think i have added 10bhp extra now  but the engine now turns over alot faster now! but there is a little problem. when i press all 4 window swtiches together the lights dim abit and the revs drop a teeney weeney. is that normal even with a new battery? or should i take it back? i  was getting a bosch 1 for £45 but that was too small
