Title: pb camshaft in a 2litre agg
Post by: s25 glf on 24 November 2010, 22:09
hi guys, read with interest the 8valve cam thread and searched on here quite a bit but can anybody confirm if the cam from a mk2 gti pb engine will fit in a 97 mk3 gti agg engine code and if there is much of a benefit? Thanks in advance, stu

Yes I think it will but I don't believe it will gain you anything.

hmmm, was under the impression the pb cam had a longer duration and free up 5-10 horsepower. Cheers for the reply

Running one in mine and I must say it makes a difference.
Not been on a RR to confirm bhp but my 8v is quite lively

Some Mk2 cams have only three bearings, the fourth would need to be ground down to fit.
Not sure what engine code this is but I have both types, all the tat knocking around in the garage gets confusing sometimes

Not quite right, all non hydraulic cam are 5 bearing, hydraulic is 4 bearing and the unused bearing face on the cam will need machining to work.

cheers vw bush, was hoping somebody that had done this mod would reply. Did you manage to get the right cam from the mk2 or do they all have to be machined? Stu

All PB cams will need to be machined a non hyd cam will not work.

Will be interesting to see if you have any problems with it afterwards as it will not be case hardened so might not last long.

Still cannot see the cam giving you 5 to 10 bhp btw.

IIRC it has a sligntly longer duration so will breathe a little better, but at the risk of damaging your cat and having higher emissions come MOT time

Tell you guys what, I have a spare PB cam ground down in the garage I will post it up over the weekend.
The bearing I ground down was still rock hard underneath, which leads me to believe it is through hardened.
Either that or the case is quite thick as I recall I had to grind approx 5mm off the od to match other bearing dims.
Could have sworn it was 4 caps but hey thats life.
As stated never rr'ed the car with the cam in but it is quicker than the average 8v, have got a few other tweaks so it may be the whole package as opposed to a Wonder cam
Car passed MOT fine last time around with no issues, lets see what happens next April although I think the Tin worm will be its coffin nail not the Mk2 cam

PS mines an ADY but AGG is the same....... Wayne?

Piture of Khare gaying out with 8v cam shaft, position 4 out of 5 is the one to be ground down

vwbush, don't suppose you want to sell that ready ground cam? :) the reason i'd rather go down this route is the car only cost £300 so i grudge paying the same again for a performance cam. Tbh the car is fine as it is but i'm gonna do a timing belt soon so seeing as its off . . . It would be rude not to stick a cam in!
