Title: suspension suggestions
Post by: Guy on 24 November 2010, 13:53
alreeet

looking to replace the suspension on the rivage in the next month or so...

started looking at struts/springs and thought it would be best to ask you guys

I am looking to lower minimally/not much/not at all as I don't want to spoil the look of the rivage and keep it original as possible

but obviously I would like an increase in handling etc

sooo... bearing that in mind... and a limited budget (£200)

what would you suggest? happy to not have coilies as won't be fiddling with it too much!

Tricky one, I had the answer untill you put your budget up.... what condition are your current shocks in... are they in good working order?... if so I strongly recommend a set of Eibach Springs 40mm would be just right without ruining the look.

If you want the whole lot do not get cheap coilovers as they won't give you what you are after I don't think... You can get a full set of Jamex shocks and springs for under 200 if you have a google.

current shocks are 'ok' I think.. springs have had it for sure

what was your other suggesting (ignoring budget)

i won't get cheap coilies don't worry... have spensive koni's on the mk3 and don't want to know what cheap ones feel like in comparison!

are these the eibach that you would suggest? http://www.aktivperformanceparts.co.uk/golf-mk1-1974-1983/eibach-pro-kit-vw-golf-lowering-springs-4035mm-1974-1985-2137210-374743-.php (http://www.aktivperformanceparts.co.uk/golf-mk1-1974-1983/eibach-pro-kit-vw-golf-lowering-springs-4035mm-1974-1985-2137210-374743-.php)

Yeah something like that... The combo I used to have on my current car and the one before it were were boge/eibach... You can't go wrong with a set of boge shocks and eibach springs... I believe boge still do a full kit for around £200 but not sure on their springs.... I have also had a bilstein setup and you can get shocks and springs with a 40mm drop for around £230???  if you want keep around the £200 mark i would suggest something like the above.

Good answer, to be fair if they were rebuilt you'd be pretty pee'd off if the shocks failed not long after (which they would)

Boge gas shocks and some good quality lowering springs.

Boge gas shocks and some good quality lowering springs.

Hence why i recommended Boge shocks and Eibach springs but I don't think the budget would cut it.... Next best thing was Bilstein.

Eibach springs are a bit too stiff for a cabrio.

You know it makes sense
you will also need:

not sure what state your rears are in, changed mine for poly as they were cheap enough.

which poly rears did you go for?

How much more are we talking if you do?

I suggested those ones as they have oem comfort being bilsteins with a slightly stiffer drop as I thought that was what you were after...

Um I managed to find some Prothane ones on the bay as shown here (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=152606.msg1506306#msg1506306) and here (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=152606.msg1507614#msg1507614)

Cheap enough... I recommend greasing them up before fitting to prevent turret rust.

Just had a look on the bay for you and couldn't see any but a quick google should find your some.

Well you could always go for an Apex sport kit (same drop but firmer gas shocks)  this is still under £270 delivered + the other bits you'll need...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/APEX-Sport-Kit-VW-Golf-Mk1-Inc-Cabrio-74-83-/280524831096?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4150953978 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/APEX-Sport-Kit-VW-Golf-Mk1-Inc-Cabrio-74-83-/280524831096?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4150953978)

No point trying to spend any more IMO unless you're after some heavy duty collies... the next step up on a shocks and spring arrangement would be something like the Bilstein B12 setup but then you're looking at over £600!.. for what you want i don't think it's worth it.

Well i've had both Billie oem shocks with -40 springs and some proper expensive billies with -60 eibach springs, both were spot on for their purpose....  I think for a cabby as tidy as yours and the way I think you will drive it you're making the right choice.  Plus you're getting what you want from a reputable brand for the price of cheap sh*t collies... win.

I had that Streetline kit on my Rivage. I got it from ECP about 5 years ago, it had the Bilstein shocks but the springs were called Ventura (apparently they also made springs for Eibach  ). It was a decent kit for the money (dropped about 40mm too) as it was only about £150 at the time, but the only thing I will say is that although not overly harsh when driving around, if you hit a pot hole it felt like you had cracked the suspension as it felt like a right old whack.
