This I find weird, but been told it a common problem. However never come across it before
other day I noticed my drivers side rear wheel was sitting alot lower than the passenger side one. I thought ah broken spring. Got it on the ramp checked and no, ok must be a failed shock so changed the rears which are less than a year old. Lowered it back down and stiill the same. so back up on the ramp check the bushes all seems fine there. Stand back and look at the car and notice that the drivers side mudflap is at an angle to the wheel. Gret out a spirit level and check the axle just behind the stub and level on passenger side but out on the driver's side so got a bent axle. checked the inner of the drivers side alloy so buckles and I know I havnt hit or gone over anything that would hit the underneath of the car. What can of caused this or is it just a flaw?
car is a 1996 n plate cabriolet with 160 ish on the clock.

Very odd.
Are you sure it is not the stub axle bent.
-
yep, its the axle the spirit level is about 10 degrees out measured behind the rear drum on the axle drivers side
-
Very strange unless it has slid into a curb once.

I dont drive like that. also no damage to the alloy wheel. aiming to change it over this weekend mind you good excuse to change the bushes and replace the rear break lines as starting to go scabby

Might have happened before you got it.

had the car about 4 years. Only thing I can think of is the odd time I do lend it to customers if a car comes back we have sold with a fault. Lent it to a bloke a few weeks ago wonder if he did it

Might be the case.
It is very odd for one to bend

thats what I thought but when another mechanic says it was a common problem makes you wonder but in all the years steve has been working on them and the number of ones we have broken never come across it and in all the time we were breaking them never got asked for an axle. so never kept one so have had to go and buy one from a local scrappy, at least they are delivering it for me as we let them have all our mot failure trade in's and what did we weigh in only 3 weeks ago a 1.8 cl golf mk3 grrrrr

Im soon to be changing the backs on the 1.8 to disc.Got a full axle with new load valve, new drums, new wheel bearings and shoes. Not sure when i will get to do it but if you was to wait a bit you could have it for a bit of beer money dude.

LOL i was working for domino's pizza once and i didnt turn sharpy enough and my n/s rear whell had a tiff with a corner of a house... house won! bent the axle good, made it home tho, when i replaced it (for a bog standard drum type) i took the time to weld in some 3mm angle to reinforce it .... wont bend anymore... lol
just wish i has found discs for the rear, do the disc axles come in 4 stud 100pcd?

need either a 3.5 cabriolet rear axle and think the 2 litre mk3 avantgardes had rear disks too.
@sub. wonder if it only effects cabriolets then as they are heavier

Not much heavier than a hatch to be honest.
