hi guys ive been searching for quite a while and not found the answers to a few questions. (it could be a case of weak google fu)
ive just had the gearbox out and replaced it with a spare that a mate had ... turns out its not a very good box and is already making horrible noises.
i have another spare box and i want to do it properly and get the thing rebuilt and at the same time add the longer ratio 5th gear i know what box i need to get the longer 5th from and thatsnot a problem but does anyone have a reccomended gearbox rebuild firm ? there is one near me
www.gearboxman.co.uk spoke to a guy there this morning and he reckoned £180 would be the labour cost roughly and then about £30 for a full set of seals and £20 for the bolt kit and a few other bits and bobs and we were looking at roughly a £250 + vat cost for the rebuild does this sound about right ? theres a vw spares place in north london that sells recon boxes on an exchange basis for £295 + vat and without the longer 5th so i guess its not too bad but then if he finds more that he has to replace the price will go up. i think its the kind of place i can pay cash to avoid the dreaded but im open to other suggestions.
also at the same time im thinking i might aswell get two new drive shafts with new cv joints and am trying to find someone that sells the complete shaft does anyone ?

There's a company that does driveshafts I found them on ebay. Its bout 160 for the pair but there good and solid recons. Apart from that buy the cvs and knock the old ones of and put new ones on. What engine is it?
