Ok, I kinda embarrassed to ask but,
I have according to my Engine Plate a VW AG 1.8 20v 1J, or in laymans terms a Golf GTI 1.8 Non Turbo (for my sins).
However when i go looking for parts it asks for example if its a 1J1 or an AGN or AGU or a BAF.
Now i can pretty much rule out a BAF, but how do i tell if its an AGN or AGU? Also i assume "1J1" is just a 1J but cant seem to find a definitive answer.
Can somebody clear it up for me (and then bury the post to hide my shame).

take that long number off the above post its your VIN number..
the engine code should be stamped on front left of engine.. sticker on right hand suspension strut.. and in handbook..
-
Wont be AGU as thats turbo model..

The code that was up there did not have the serial number on it (not that daft), I've removed it anyway.
It was on the right hand suspension strut that i took the details above, it only says AG nor AGN or AGU, and 1J not 1J1 which is why im confused.

it should be stamped on the engine and on that sticker.. if it says agm then yours is a agn..

You missing my point, it only says AG - it does not say AGN or AGU just AG, but when i look around everything talks about AGN or AGU - three letters, not two.

Could you take a picture of the sticker? It should also be in the spare wheel well as well.
It will 90% be a AGN. The 1J is the platform, it is used to identify parts with the motor (platform). eg, 1j is a Golf 8n is a Audi TT ect.

Can a VW dealer not tell you if you supply the reg.

I found it,
It doesn't mention it on the engine label but it is mentioned in the manual on the sticker that was placed there when it was bought. Its an AGN.
Not the easiest thing to find out.
