just about to buy an 1984 mk2 1.6 diesel for a 20vt project. iv been told to hold off for a later model but this one is in good nick and just too cheap to pass up. should i go for it or hold off?
-
Why where you told to hold off for a later model?? If it is really that good and too good to pass up then go for it
-
Later model would be better plus being diesel means more work.
-
im going to be stripping everything anyway?
RE wayne why more work? thanks for the info

I believe the later car's wiring loom makes the conversion easier.
-
Get a late spec 8v gti .. leave the poor diesel alone, hardly any left anyway
-
if its going to have a 1.8t it makes no odd what mk2 you buy, the wiring is going to have to be spliced to the fusebox no matter what. if it was a mk3 engine you were going for then buying a 90spec mk2 would make it easier, but mk4 has totally different fusebox. a gti model would be a little easier though as the injection pumps, wiring and pipework are already there.
-
Keep the diesel for when you realise the 20V Turbo is too expensive to run
-
haha il only be using it for the track well for the moment :)
thanks for the help guys it much appreciated.
so would i have to buy the injection pumps, wiring and pipework from a gti if i go with the diesel? sorry about the stupid questions i prob shouldnt be doing this as im a complete newbie but im just dying to.
-
yeah, or change the tank, pump, lines nad filter housing for mk3 items. you'll prob want to change the tank anyway as i think the neck is different on a diesel one? even if not it saves you the bother of cleaning the thing out
-
thanks rubjonny. do i change the wishbones and driveshafts too?
-
wishbones same as normal mk2, shafts i think will be 90mm? best to measure.
-
thanks il do that when i get to that stage.
