Title: New project - 1.8t
Post by: benday007 on 21 November 2010, 21:33
Hi guys

This weekend I'm back in the golf club having bought a unfinished project
A 1999 plate 1.8 turbo gti, which has full recaro interior, heated front seats.

It has a few bits to finish including a front passenger seat rebuild with new bolster foams and try to fix the heated seat, it's in bits at the mo

The biggest problem I need to cure is the running if the vehicle when accelerating,
The car picks up speed ok, by there is a judder throughout the car when accelerating, I do no think it Is wheel balancing as if I back off it goes away

I suspect the issue is something to do with the turbo itself, maybe the engine.

Can anyone make any suggestions, this is my first turbo car and I have little knowledge of them!

Cheers
Ben

Look at:

The MAF
Coilpacks
Ignition amplifier

One of those is probs the likely culprit.

Mate i would bet my bottom dollar it's your MAF sensor!

I had the same issue when i first bought my golf!

Most garages you take it to will try and shaft you by saying it's the turbo!

First point of call mate MAF, costs about £80 and doddle to fit :)

p.s welcome to the club!

Looks as though everyone has hit the nail on the head. Disconnected the maf when cold, let it warm up and took it for a spirited drive, no more problems! New maf to be ordered has anyone tried one from german Swedish?

OK

So after taking the MAF aapart, throughly cleaning it with carb cleaner and putting it back, it drove fine for One evening. Drove to work today, Back to poor running.

So borrowed some bits of a friends Golf (which was running perfectly), and through process of eliminacion through MAF Sensor, Coil Packs (All 4) It turns out the Bosch Ignition amplifer on the aibox was the culprit

Had the first real drive of it tonight with it running ok, Much more fun to drive than my old V5, guessing partially because there isnt such a weighty engine so drives that little better

Very happy!!!

Next I need to:

Fix the In Op Cruise control,

Figure out the fault with the passenger Heated seat (Which is in Bits)

Build up the tailgate handle Lock Mech so I can open the Boot from the outside.

Any suggestions??
