As some of you may know i posted a thread up on here a couple of weeks ago about a mk2..
Well today i went about 60 miles to go look at one and me being me (in impulse car buyer) i put a deposit down and am going to pick up on Wednesday night after work.
Just thought i would post here and ask you guys what you think, i no its not a 16v or anything fancy but i wanted it as a project car and more than likely do an engine change or similar, make it a fast road / track car.. atleast its a 3 door
This was the first mk2 i viewed or had even been in and i know what you guys feel now they are totally amazing and even though its an 8v the thing pulls very hard.
I checked all the arches as best i could and couldn't feel no rust or anything but will let you know when i pick it up as i saw it in dark today..
Its needs a bit of tidying up here and there as its not mint but thought for £900 and a full tank of petrol i cant complain..

-
Cheers for that Kev cant wait to pick up now lol
I am yet to see a 16v go for that lol
-
That was a bargain.
Dont track it! Make it mint. Full repaint I dare you!
-
Dont dare me lol I am still not 100% what im going to do.. i drive a mk4 as my daily so this i can do anything to as i wont be driving it all the time..
I will start to strip it down in the coming weeks on the hunt for rust.. there is no visible but im sure its hiding somewhere lol
Mr. Blue so you really think just make it a mint car respray alloys refurbed etc ??
-
Yeah if its a keeper do it
-
Well i will keep yas updated once i pick it up on Wednesday..
-
Looks a clean sound car. :afro:
-
little money for a late gti well done  if i were you i would drive it for a time and get to know all the faults and niggles the car may have before you start taking it apart its got a long mot so you shouldnt have 2 many problems. the handbrake lever looks high in the pics so there is your first job ha ha to start you off. definate bargain and good colour
-
Looks like you've found yourself a really tidy car  I'm sure you'll find plenty of things to keep you busy though.
-
Cheers mate I can see this being the start to a long road
-
Bodily mine isn't as straight as yours, both my rear arches will need replacing at some point but all the other little bits of rust I've been able to do with rattle cans and you can't tell the difference once there polished back.
Such an easy and fun car to work on too. Have you had a good look at the sills? I'll be doing these on mine too
-
no idea mate im picking up wednesday and i will strip all the sills and arches off in the next week or so to check for rust im sure theres a patch of it somewhere.. the only visible is at bottom of rear window near side only like the size of a 50p.. and the drivers door is suffering from lacquer peel quite bad that will need respraying..
Its literally just something to potter around with when i have spare time.. i wana do as much as i can myself and just use this as a learning on car most i can throw down the drain is £900 not a lot in my eyes..
Time will tell how solid the car is lol
-
looks like a lovely car.
if you stay open minded about the fact it is nearly 20 years old then there should be no problems.
they really are brilliant cars to own and a great way to learn how to fix stuf yourself.
they aren't unreliable but any car of this age is going to need maintenance and care to keep it tip top.
royal blue is the best colour imo too, not that i'm biased.

You did commit the cardinal sins of viewing a car in the dark and buying the first one you saw, but I guess you're not expecting miracles at that price, so all is good!
It is possible to get them very tidy (and reliable!), but only if you put time and money into them. I'm not sure I would bother taking the arches and sills off straight away unless you have cause to - you can feel under the rear arch lips to give you a good idea of whether it is rusting or not. Same with the sills - have a look along the top of the sill, and feel the bottom of it under the car (plus it's very easy to break the side skirt clips). If all is good, then a proper full inspection can wait until the weather improves.
Even as it stands though, it should be a good car, and will keep you and your wallet busy for many months...

That was a bargain.
Dont track it! Make it mint. Full repaint I dare you!
Do it, make it mint and the sell it back to me  any more good comments about it and ill have to put the price up lol.
-
I am leaning to making it mint lol Ive decided to take my mk4 off the road for a couple of weeks to have a scoot around in the mk2 really looking forward to it now mate..
Will see you Wednesday Kev.. you cant up the price now its mine !!
-
Tidy the 2 and track the 4.
Save what's worth saving and butcher the thing of little interest.
-
Just make it an a road blaster! Get a 2.0l 16v in there with a sorted chassis
-
i would love to track them both DH.. The mk4 is my daily the mk2 would need to much maintenance to be a daily.. it will be my weekend fun toy.. The mk2 is now a classic in my eyes so needs to be looked after
Really not sure what to do yet too many choices.. chances will be a 2.0 16v or 1.8t depends how competent i feel when i get it lol
still thinks loads of carbon fibre would make the mk2 to die for but you guys would probably hate that lol
-
1.8t 1.8t 1.8t  heres my old one, bit of a gash install but thats what happens when you dont do it your self, (http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u88/space_rat/DSC00661.jpg) (http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u88/space_rat/IMG_0985.jpg) the looks of it never grew on me but fcuk it was fast,
-
I pick up my new car tomo cant wait quite excited
Kev 1.8t is definitely a contestant not 100% tho as i no the 16v form mk3 will be pretty much plug and play for same power..
We will see we will see too many options running through my head.. might convert it to 4wd yet lol
-
Can be a good investment once made tidy. Makes sence.
-
what you mean the car once made tidy ??
-
Its needs a bit of tidying up here and there as its not mint but thought for £900 and a full tank of petrol i cant complain..
just going by that.
track the mk4 as above
-
no no i love the mk4 as a daily its so comfy and it has luxuries like climate control and heated seats lol
mk2 is for pure weekend fun..
-
I have a mk2 for a daily and its calm and collected when it wants to be nice, furking quick when it doesn't! In Royal Blue too, which adds 30bhp!
-
So is royal blue a good colour then ??
-
Got yourself a great car there, very good price too, do the right thing, make it perfect, its worth it for a car that nice. Happy motoring!
-
So is royal blue a good colour then ??
imo yes. it is brilliant.
colour looks different depending on how the light catches it
look at the difference between the pic and my sig - both the same car just different light

Look awesome mate
-
I know have my mk2  Picked it up last night about 9:00pm got home about 10:15ish and i love it it pulls really well..
had a few hiccups opened the sunroof for some unknown reason then it wouldn't close lol pulled over and closed it..
my N/S wing mirror is missing its adjuster the actual metal rod piece i have the 2 outer pieces..
And bloody hell you sit so high in the mk2 lol thought i was in a range rover
Gave the car a quick clean today couldn't get pics as it got dark very quickly.. The paint is not in good shape and no amount of compound or such will bring it back it is going to need a respray at some point.. I have lacquer peel around all the windows one side.. the drivers door has bad lacquer peel.. And the car has more stone chips than travis perkins !!
Need loads of trim pieces that have either broken or been lost over the years and the seats and carpet need a bloody good clean.. but all in all i love it oh yer the clutch is really high lol
-
Im miffed about the sunroof not closing? cant say i ever opened it that much but never had a problem with it.
remove passenger door card and the mirror adjuster should be in there, it fell through ages ago, i never thought about it too much.
hope you enjoy it as much as i did
