Title: Stuck starter motor bolt
Post by: jmsheahan on 20 November 2010, 12:49
Why is it the 'simple' jobs always give the most arse ache?

I tried to clean up the starter motor connections today to see if solved the hot start problem. The nut that holds the electrical leads to the starter motor is rather rusty. I tried to undo it but now the threaded shaft it sits on just goes round with the nut. I've soaked the nut in penetrating fluid but any ideas how to get it off? Not a lot of access there.

It undid a fair few turns and then just got stuck. So now the leads are loose and a connection can't be made.

cant you sort of lever a screwdriver or something behind it and try and wind the whole thing out?

Will the shaft just wind out completely then? Doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Or try an cut the nut of somehow, I know its tight, But a hacksaw blade an just persevere with it,
And then you could pack the bolt up with some washers after and put new nut on 1st bit of the thread,,

Yeah I think I'm going to have to cut the damn thing off.

If I cut the nut off I should have 1-2 threads to nip a new nut up on the end. Lost the light now, will have to do it tomorrow. I hate cars

It always happens on a cold dark day 2 doesnt it,
I started 2 tighten my Power steerin belt up under car last week,
Took wheel off undid nuts an then slammed me finger in car door,
Believe me i was in tears puttin it all back 2gether after,,

Can you get mole grips on the thread then use a spanner? Other wise I would cut the nut off if it doesn't budge?

Isn't that the truth mate!

I'm hoping so. Pliers did nothing and don't have any molegrips but hoping to blag some tomorrow. As the shaft turns to I'm concerned I've broken something inside the solenoid? It still starts fine though if I bridge the gap, just makes a few sparks

I'll get the grinder out tomorrow to cut it if not as you say.

If it starts you have not fubared it mate its just a long metal connector worst case stick a grub screw type of nut to hold the circular clips in place

it looks to me like it is very slightly cross threaded on there. Don't forget that is a connector. If you remove the stud completely you will bugger the solenoid internally. You could be looking at a replacement starter TBH unless you are very lucky.

DPB; what does that stud connect to inside the solenoid?

Like I say it still works if I bridge the gap when the between nut and connectors so hoping once I've chopped the nut off I'll be able to use a new 13mm nut, albeit with a shorter threaded stud.

I hope I don't need a new one to be honest, they aren't cheap  :lipsrsealed:

PITA, should have just left it alone

But where would you chop it off? I don't know exactly how the solenoid is put together, but I gather that the stud you see there is the tail end of a captive headed copper bolt to which a conductor to the upper part of the solenoid is connected. It will be very difficicult to gain any kind of purchase on the remaining stud to be able to turn that nut. Copper is very soft and the nut will either be steel or brass, so the item that is going to fail is the stud as it is the softer.
I would try to get some grips on the end of the stud and try to wind that nut back to where it should be.

try to find another nut run it up to the stuck one then try locking one against the other might work dont try pulling the stud out as said before its part of the solenoid perhaps if you can get some heat on it that would help be carefull though

Tried the two bolt method yesterday, no joy unfortunately.

Had another go today - plusgas and molegrips are my new fav tools

cheers for the help everyone
