Title: Door lock problem
Post by: intenso on 20 November 2010, 12:38
Hey i just noticed today that the lock on my driver's side door does not work, when i put the key in it just turns and turns but doesn't lock/unlock although the key fob still works for locking/unlocking so must be a problem with the actual lock mechanism.

Any idea what the problem is and if i can diy it or should i take it to the garage and how much a garage is gonna skin me ?

Have a quick search, as others have had the same issue.
I had the same problem a little while ago, and used wd40/ spray grease into the lock and remove the bung and spray in there. Touch wood, this has solved the problem for me.

Had a look in the mkv forum but couldnt find anything similar.

The lock has not siezed, the key goes in the barrel fine and it turns freely it just doesn't lock the car.

Sounds like the lower part of the lock cylinder has snapped off??? If you open your door and look down the edge of it there is a black plastic cover that goes down the length of the door, take this off.

Then there is a small round piece of what looks like duct tape?  take this off aswell and inside that you should be able to make out a T20 torx screw, firstly pull the door handle out and hold it there then get your T20 driver and turn the screw in the door anti clockwise this will release the door lock.

Examine the lock cylinder and tumblers for any damage and also make sure it has the end on it???? if you look into the door where the lock was you will see where the lower part of the lock cylinder goes and turns the mech to unlock/lock the door.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Finally got a chance today to take out the barrel, was an easy job.

Turns out something inside the barrel is broke as the end bit doesnt turn when i turn the key although physically it looks ok,  Are barrels easy to fix if i get another from the scrappy or will i need to throw monies at the stealers ?
