Post by: JC on 20 November 2010, 10:56
Right then mk1 guru's  a couple of Qs as i start work on my garage resident.  . . .

1, Front bumper - can these be removed and  left off - i know you cant on a MkII

2, Fuel filler neck change - a noddy guide would be GREAT

Thanks in advance

I didn't realise you'd replaced the Passat so quickly.

MK1 Rivage, very  Blue with cream leather??

Have you got any pics to show yet??

yep i think you can remove bumpers just undo x2 bolts on chassis leg in engine bay and same in boot, altho you will need to do summat about front indicators. also wont it look odd with the side skirts still fitted?

fuel filler neck

What he said, at first I thought you meant for good, why can't a mk2 bumper stay off while working on the car???

More questions!!!!!.... about time something happened in here!.

Ah but the setup of a mk2 has it's advantages which I wish mine had, at least you can unbolt the whole of the front end... MK1, its all welded

What wishes did you get and what bushes do you want?  standard or poly? if i was going standard i'd probably get them all in one, if i was going for poly then i would want to choose and put them in myself.

What happened between Guy buying it and it all looking shiny, to now, where it needs lots of stuff doing?

Did he buy a shiny dog?

no... it always needed work doing to it... these things made themselves apparent through the first six months of ownership

and it wasn't all clean and shiny when I got it... I made it clean and shiny

Aye. I've read your thread and all, and now Chuff is looking after it.

Prior to that I looked in when you bought it and cleaned it up.  Thought that was all it needed, shame.

Anyhoo, hope you get it sorted for the summer so you your better half can enjoy it.  :lipsrsealed:

however.. along the way there have been a few problems which needed/need to be sorted

the alternator belt being rounded off was solved, amazingly, by rubjonny.. who did a fantastic job of cambelt and water pump replacement for me

stereo system and clifford alarm installed... unfortunately a bad wiring route led to the car flooding when it rained (not my fault)

and now it is time for the suspension and ball joints and wishbones to be replaced...

then the hood etc

then mot and cosmetics

she's an old girl... she is bound to need some loving from time to time

Chuff has it because I was looking for somewhere dry to store her over winter and chuff was looking for a project to tinker with to stop him spending his own money

its much easier to work on her in the garage and get things done... and it has given me the motivation to do so and learn at the same time

its always been in the plan to do this to her to make her more driveable... the 3 will be going at some point and I want a car I can really drive and enjoy safely

the mrs now has a focus... so the mk1 will be out for high days and holidays

just imagine it as the Chuff of the Rivage world Elvi,

Good looking  :smug: on the outside - slightly fcuked underneath.

and dont forget,

these things are getting RARER by the year, thus once this old lady has had some fettling, the value can only go up up up

In short I think it could 'run' quite happily as it is.. but I am trying to get her into as good as condition as I/Chuff can

Well thanks for the update and all the best.  The Rivage in blue is my first choice for MK1 and I'm very tempted to get one as well.  After seing "Eyeletboy's" Black Mk1 in and around Neath, they do look the business.

If I get one I may as well get a bloody camper van as well - but that'll be a spanking new California.  None of this tent malarky when I go to weekend shows.

Jonathan.

this was too good an opportunity to miss when it came up for sale.. must say though that it has taught me a lot

if I ever sold it I would use the money towards a camper... although I would be just as happy in a tent with the cabby parked up alongside!

Sounds like mine up front even though its got 130 on her... should be worse IMO due to it having a big valve head with high lifters etc... next year will get the head rebuilt if possible... not got much to go on bar the plaque on the slam panel.  yours is sounding OK TBO, they can get really noisy but they soldier on forever!  I've had far higher mileage ones in the past!

Ah well they are cheap enough.. make sure you get one with all the rods, new ball and spring etc... not just the bushes, for the extra couple of squids its worth it...  not a fun job though... poor Chuff.  I got a poly bush for the main rod and it was a right b!tch to put in, the rest of it is easy enough, just a little time consuming and patience required.
