would a faulty thermostat cause a car to run rich...
ive recently replaced temp sender (genuine part) but car still doesnt sit bang on at 90...when about town it does but when on open roads it drops back a bit..... heater does work to great either on open roads, not alot of warm air...
also notice fuel consumption has dropped.........
thanks,
-
No but you defiantly need a new one
-
thinking now its the water pump....... ?
-
was it a cheap sensor you fitted as i fitted one on mine and had same problems changed thermostat twice and still the same in end had to pay out for gen vw sensor for about £29 of top me head and this sorted it so look like it was faulty sensor.
-
genuine vw temp sender fitted....
- mpg is done quite considerably,....
- Temp guage sits between minimum and 60-70 on motorways and all normal driving on main roads.....
- When idling, or crawling in traffic jam temp guage goes to 90, no higher
- Top pipe on the right of the radiator (looking down on it) gets warm ...
- bottom pipe from radiator on right hand side is cold....
so thermostat...or water pump.......
on idle i can see coolant being pumped into the tank at left side of engine bay so perhaps water pump is ok or maybe its not operating at its full.......
headache.............
-
I would say thermostat,
I recently changed my temp sensor for a genuine VW one but like yours the Gauge would sit at about 1/4 when on motorway, Would rise to 90 when stationary or driving slowly
Changed thermostat & it now sits bang on 90
-
thermostat u think might be sitting partially open............?
reason i dont think its the water pump is that at the coolant fill tank i can see fluid being pumped in........
water pump was only fitted 1yr ago (8k miles)..............
-
Thermstat I think is giving you problems
-
Thermostat would be my first port of call.
Surely if its the pump it would be overheating? Well certainly getting to 90 degrees and then buzzing the aux fan constantly?
The stat and temp sender I have fitted recently were both GSF parts so not genuine and they work and operate as normal. Although I could tell that the spring on the 'stat was thinner than that on the original part I tool off, so I guess it won't last as long.
-
Another vote for thermostat, mine dropped back the temp on the move then went back to 90 when in traffic or sitting idling etc.. also took ages to warm up.
New stat job done.
-
how much for a thermostat and seal ring anyways....?
europart online list them as £9 ish with seal....
are these ok or is it better to get from vw dealers....?
-
I would go for a genuine one to be honest.
-
any ideas on cost....?

Well fitted new thermostat today and gauge now sits bang on 90 all the time! Still got the code for running rich in bank one but now after changing stat mpg has increased ... back into 40's onto motorway/ main roads....
