Title: Just bought a U281, any experiences?
Post by: Waffs1984 on 19 November 2010, 10:24
So i used to have the eBay special version of VAGCOM on my laptop but it was never quite right and stopped working for some unknown reason. Since then i have formatted my laptop and can't be bothered trying to install it again only for it not to work.

My parents just bought an A4 from the auctions and the engine management light is on albeit the car drives perfectly ok. So i ordered a U281 code reader from a chap on eBay as the U280 would have been fine for my car but the A4 is a 2003 model and may or may not have CAN bus aswell. Apparently the U281 is backwards compatible so i bought it for the princely sum of £25.

The manual seems fairly comprehensive in its list of codes and it seems easy enough to use. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with one of these readers? I'll try it tonight on the golf and see what i think

OK so got delivered on Friday and i must say it is damn easy to use. The only thing to note is that the car throws out the 5-digit fault codes as per vagcom and these need to be looked up on the RossTech site, the codes given in the instruction manual are fairly useless as i don't know what car they apply to!

Anyway very happy for the money, hassle free and also its CAN bus enabled so should work on my mums A4 too, happy days
