Hi don't know wether anyone can help just after some general directions as to what the best lens to buy for my needs would be. Well i am just starting out but want to become a keen photographer, and want a lens that will enable me firstly to take mostly photographs of dogs, this will be sometimes at a fair distance however i would say probably no more than, 30 metres away. I have a canon 1000d and looking for a lens below £250. Thanks

Really depends on what you've already go, but assuming you've got a standard zoom lens then.

I would recommend the Sigma AF 70-300mm f4-5.6 lens for a lower cost brilliant lens. - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-70-300mm-f4-5-6-Macro-Canon/dp/B000AM7CJ0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1289991471&sr=8-3 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-70-300mm-f4-5-6-Macro-Canon/dp/B000AM7CJ0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1289991471&sr=8-3)
I have exactly the same camera as you and haven't had an issue with this lens at all. Not bad cost wise at all and the images are of a very good quality. I'd also recommend the nifty fifty -Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II - for the closer up shots in lower light conditions. - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EF-50-1-8-Lens/dp/B00005K47X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1289991529&sr=1-1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EF-50-1-8-Lens/dp/B00005K47X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1289991529&sr=1-1)
