hi guys i just drove my new mk2 home its a 1.8 8v 4+e
and its seems to run like a pig
It kinda stutters and doesnt idle very well changing from 1,000 to 2,000 revs at random times
but when i put my foot down it seems to sort itself out
also there is a pipe coming from the airbox thats not attached to anything should this have a filter or something on the end
ill put some photos up when i get to work tomorrow
-
If the airbox is on top of thew carb then the pipe with nothing on the end use to have a cold air feed into the wing. Doesn't matter if there int a cold air feed.
-
cool well thats one thing sorted,
any idea about the poor running
-
Well my 1.6 driver had a webber carb and when that wasn't set up right on the h2o in ran sh!t. Plus is it timed correctly? Hasn't had owt done to it modification wise is there?
-
no its a completey standard motor except a radio lol also i noticed on the engine on top of the clutch cover bit there is a plastic bung with a hole in the middle
what is it and is it important ?
-
That's to time it up with the fly wheel mate it has a hex screwed in the gear box then a bung. Its for timing the engine. With it running rough have you made sure the coil is all tight and where the wires go. It just occured to me my gti went loose on low tention side I think. But we cleaned it all up and it was better. Hope this helps bud
Liam
-
nice one good call with the coil ill check in the morning before i set off for work also im not very good with mechanics is it easy to check/fix
cheers fella
-
Take the spade connextions off the coil see if its clean if not clean it and one connects to the roccker just clean that up. Am just going from what av done. And maybe my mechanics qualifications. But am not 100% sure. Haha
-
Try pressing down on the carb when its idling, if it idles better then its probably the rubber gasket between the carb and the inlet manifold thats split letting in unmetered air. see if it wobbles, its a common failure. When you put your foot down the vacuum sucks the carb down tight and it runs ok. could also be a vac leak into the manifold from one of the many pipes. Pics would be helpful. The loose pipe could be a breather, if so it should be connected somewhere.
-
You'll also hear a hissing noice with vac pipes. And my engine was out by the time the carb rubber gasket went but there only bout 15 gbps
-
cheers guys youve really helped (hopefully) this is my first question as a mk2 owner and i must say you seem alot nicer than those mk3 chaps lol
ill have a look at these things tomorrow at some point also ill get some pics up to see if that helps
once again cheers guys
-
Haha mk3 ppl lol.I use to own one but not for long
-
i only had mine 7 months and now i literally cant give it away
-
That's what scrap yards r for mk3s n saxos. Haha.
-
its tempting the only offer ive had is £200 what a joke i spent more than that servicing the thing
-
What engine. Depending on I might know some who might be interested
-
its a 1.4 with 84,000 miles on the clock its in the classifieds section if you want a look
-
I'll ask a mate. How much were u looking for it?
-
£350-£400 if im honest mate
-
heres some pics of the engine there not great ill try and take some more later

-
I'll have a word and see mate
-
There's also a short bit of 15mm vac pipe about 100mm long that plugs on to the RH end (looking into the engine) of the inlet manifold, this often perishes and splits on the underside where you can't see it as crud collects in it, you need to have a good feel underneath to see if its soft & split, again, when you give it welly, the split sucks itself together and all seems well, usually affects cylinders 3 & 4 most.
-
Nice one I'll have a look later because it does feel like it's misfiring or running on less than 4 cylinders
Cheers mate

is this the pipe if so were does it go please
-
vac line doesnt look right, have a read thru this:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=18871.0
near the bottom are some pics of the vacuum hoses, with some nice colouring in to make it easier to see
-
cheers ill try and put it on tonight and see what happens
-
right then i done the check's you guy's said and nothing was wrong with the coil connections, i put the vacuum hose back on and it still run like poo so my brother decided to take the air filter out the box but leave the box in place and it made the world of difference so im thinking maybe the previous owner decided to TRY and tune the carb but ballsed it up and now the mixture is wrong what do you reckon.
also how do i fix the mixture (i know theres screws on the carb you play about with but i dont want to make it worse now)
-
I think there's a single screw on the side all you do is have car running and turn the screw one way see if it improves, make sure to count the turns so you can put it back.
-
i just took the front of the airbox off and now it idles at about 1000 rpm but then i drive and come to a stop and it idles at 1500rpm but then it runs rough again i was wondering if it could be the waxstat,
its boggy and jumpy and has poor acceleration
its running like the choke is stuck on,
if youve ever had a manual and left it on by mistake youll know what i mean
-
feel the carb as engine warms up. it should get boiling hot pretty quickly, basically it should get as hot as the side hose does as fast. it needs a good coolant feed from the head, problem is on these the o'ring seal in the inlet manifold swells up and blocks the hole over time, common fault on em. this means choke and waxstat wont come off as quickly as they should:

-
thats sound exactly the same as what im experiencing, now the next question.........................who wants to do it for me
ill give it a go if i get the time how long do you reckon it will take a novice to do it (i.e me)
-
its a right bugger of a job. you need thin allen bit and extension bits, a mirror also handy. before you undo anything make sure you can get to all 6 inlet manifold bolts! dont want to end up like me and have everything off except the last damn bolt in the middle and have to go out to get more tools
-
do you have to take the carb off to get to all this or can you work around it
your more than welcome to help me do it
-
ideally take the carb off, it would be a bit of a faff otherwise. 3 bolts to remove tho and it comes off. can leave fuel puipes on and just move it out the way if you like, but dont turn it upside down ;)
-
Cheers mate I know this sound stupid but is there a quick fix I can do just until I get chance to sort it out ?
-
not read all the posts, But my Old R5GTT used to suffer terrible Carb freeze even if the ambient air was sill above freezing (if you ever put petrol on your hand its freezing even when the temp is warm.
If your doing motorway miles its very easy for carb freeze to happen, if its doing it around town its no doubt a adjustment or a blocked jet or enrichment/gasket/vacuum leak.
there is a great Haynes manual on Carbs i recomend picking it up , covers nearly all European carbs from late 1970s to the phase out
-
to be honest im pretty sure its the O ring as the carb doesnt heat up and the symptoms are exactly what im experiencing but i appreciate your help,
Just out of interest do you know how much a garage would charge to do the O 0ring if i supplied the parts
-
should take em under an hour to do it, assuming no issues with rounded off bits. a possible solution would be to put a T piece into the hose coming off the side of the head, and running the pipe from the inlet to that instead, and blank off the inlet connection to prevent coolant loss. its a bit of a bodge but it should do the trick.
-
Just phoned a VW SPECIALIST near me and he's never heard of said O ring and basically called me a liar but guess what he doesnt mind taking a look at it and charging me for an hours labour to look what a c**t
-
not much of a specialist then, i suggest you take your business elsewhere
-
trust me i will, he was so arrogant he basically laughed at me saying there's no such thing daft tw*t
by the way guys i really appreciate all your help with this and hopefully i will have a nice running car soon
