Hello all,
1) My mk2 golf's coolant hose, the one next to the airfilter, split whilst i was driving. AA man did a temp fix for me but i need to change the hose. So i bought the top and bottom hose. Any tips??
2) The haynes manual's a bit fuzzy. Is the halfords manual any good?
3) Is the a part manul online apart from that russian one?
4) I also bought coolant but its 1.5 litre. Will the be enough after I refil the whole system? Or do i have to dilute it?
Cheers.

Take your car to the main stealer and show them the hose you need, mix the antifreeze 50% with water. I would drain the cooling system and refill with fresh coolant, that way you know that there is the correct amount in the system.

coolant hose next to air filter? i guess thats the top radiator hose so just unclip the old one and clip the new one in its place, mix the coolant and jobs a goodun........... or am i answering the wrong question? it shouldn't be hard to swap a hose or two!!!
if you are going to drain your system, after you've topped it back up, give all the hoses a good squeeze when you think the system is full of coolant to get rid of air bubbles then let it run up to temperature with the filler cap off to allow all the air to work its way out. then top up to the correct level and put the cap back on.

I will be draining the system but will 1.5L of coolant be enough to refil the whole system?
My old coolant was green and i seem to have bought pink coolant. Is that gonna be a problem? Should i just stick to green?
Thanks.

shouldn't worry too much about the colour!!! as long as its decent stuff it doesn't matter. i know a guy who hass the pink stuff in his g60 and he uses it because he has got a load of clear hoses and it looks cool!!!
can't seem to find any definate figures for the amount you'll need but that sounds about right.

Check what coolant you bought, if its G12 it wont mix with the olds stuff IIRC. Did you buy it from VW? If so it is likely to be G12+ which is more purpley and can be mixed with anything :)

I bought the wrong hoses and i have been talking about the wrong hoses. D'oh!!
The hose i need is thin and comes out of the auto-choke (i think) as circled in photo 1 (where it split). It goes around under the airbox and joins as show in photo 2.
Can i only buy this at the dealer?

I might have one of those in my bits box, you live near Bracknell?

Darn i wish i had read this earlier. Thanks for the offer jonny but i have ordered if from my local stealer but had i read this i would have picked it up from u.
Im gonna be flushing the system as aparrently they dont make green coolant anymore - i dont mind doing it anyway coz i can clear the system. I have bought pink coolant.
Will i have any issues about clleaning the coolant expansion tank?
Thanks.

Best way is to remove the hoses, block the holes off, fill it up with water & bleach and leave overnight. Then flush it all out with a hosepipe and it will come up like new :)

Oh and if you're totally filling up your coolant system, you'll probably need 2 bottles of coolant. Make sure you get some de-ionised water from Halfords (battery top-up water) too, helps prevent corrosion. I had just under half a bottle of coolant left over, I topped it up with the battery water and chucked it in the boot just in case :)
-
I will do that, the cleaning of the hoses. Ok so is that the Top radiator, bottom radiator hose and the 2 hoses in the pic in my other post? Anymore hoses?
Also how much de-ionised water to add to the hoses? Im presumming you add the water eventhough the coolant is a 50:50 mix?
-
There are 2 hoses to the heater matrix, another hose from the water pump to under the flange where the top hose goes, and the little return hose that goes from the rad to the header tank :)
If the coolant is a nice blue colour you probably wont have to worry about flushing it out too much, like I say the G12+ will mix with any other type without going funny. Just blast the matrix, the block and the radiator through with a hose. Another trick is after you drain it, fill it back up with tap water and run the engine for a few minutes then drain it again, that should clean most of the old coolant out :)
50:50 mix is what I use and my engine has been fine all winter and doesn't run hot :)

Just about to refill my system also, what is the capacity of the system (Mk2 gti 16v)? I think someone told me 7 liters, is this correct?
-
Ive done it now. Took longer than expected coz the main stealer i bought the pipe from ordered the wrong one. Thanks to everyone for their advice.
deefadog: I think the capacity in my mk2 1.8 driver was less than 2L's.
-
its about 6.3 litres I think, Snap: You probably only got 2 because the block hadn't been drained :)
