Title: AGU Turbo upgrade
Post by: GSXR-GTI on 15 November 2010, 13:23
Hello all,

Not been on in a while, but can briefly remember talk about upgrading the turbo on the old AGU.

If memory serves me right (which it hardly does ) a 225bhp TT turbo bolts straight onto my manifold?

Plan is bigger turbo + Rtech map. Not going to go to silly as I've got the bikes for that, just like to squeeze a little more life out of the old girl.

Any help/bollockings appreciated

Cheers people

A k04-023 turbo from a 225bhp TT does fit with work, but it will be costly.

If you want abit more power and some nice torque then would recommend getting a K03s turbo of a later mk4 golf, these are a straight bolt on to your exsisting manifold, you can still run standard fmic, injectors. Would recommend up grading to a 3 inch downpipe, sports cat and a milltek cat back exhaust, a good panel filter, forge TIP, Forge 007p recirc valve.

This is what most people do and they get good results with a r-tech remap. Your better off discussing your requires with R-tech.

What he said, youve got to change oil lines and other stuff with a k04 turbo.

But I would get a fmic, then youll have 225bhp all the time rather than for a bit then heatsoak comes in too play.

Also I wouldnt bother changing your cat back exhaust, Id get a custom downpipe though for sure. My opinion on it, is ess thress research, found his exhaust upgrade gave him nothing lol, plus for £1000

Id prob spend that money you saved on the fmic and some 312mm discs and some decent pads.

Cheers boys, that's a great help

Any ideas what kind of bhp increase I'm likely to see with a ko3s upgrade?

Many thanks

Around the 225-230 area, its the torque you want though, they can be as high as 290lb but thats running high boost and not good for the turbo but would fly lol Most are about 240lb I think? But A=ask r-tech about it, as with your permission they might give it more boost for more torque. 260lb ish.

The k03s feels much better than the k03 too, feels more lively.

without a fmic dont expect torque figures above 240lb/ft ish. the intake temps will be too high. Even with a fmic, you may not see a massive increase in torque as each car reacts differently.

I would recommend a cat back exhaust, as it helps the gases escape quicker and would say R-tech will tell you the same. The larger downpipe helps the turbo spin up quicker as the gases flow/escape better, but then if you run a standard system, then its going to slow the gases down and when running higher power wont allow the turbo to get its full potential.

look at people's spec's in the mk4 build section, see what the percentage of people have done on agu's with K03s conversions

Have a look at my build thread aswell, to help you decide

Yer deffo a FMIC!, also maybe a silicone Tip.

Don't R-tech do a k03s remap if you dont have a custom exhaust, few people on the audi forum had had it done without an exhaust. And still got the same gains as one with

Just cant get my head around £/bhp, for a £1000 your looking at what maybe £200 for 1bhp. That's even if it does give any gains, would feel more free. Depends if you want the sound to go with the speed though

a milltek cat back system costs around £450 new, so not sure where yo get £1000 from, maybe different for the audi people.

R-Tech maps are adjusted to suit the car there on, so there running the best power but safe.

FMIC isnt a must if your aiming for 220bhp

I ment a turbo back exhaust  You have to really change the whole lot wouldnt you if you wanted a bit of gain ? Thats what I was quoted for a milltek when enquiring for a remap on my k03s, and after reading ess three findings on exhausts I crossed it off the list!

Yer not a must have, but will keep your temps down throughout your journey, leaving you with best performance all the time, rather than just for a bit then once the smic have heatsoaked, then that 220bhp will go downhill, used to hate it in my car! That was standard :(. Do you know what heat soak is ? ( Talking to the op not you hulmie lol)

Thanks for all your help so far boys, it's appreciated

Yeah I  understand the principles of heatsoak, I have seen fmic on eBay, but these look a little bit on the cheap + nasty side :undecided:

Been scouring the net for a good k03s, found this:

 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/K03S-VW-Golf-Jetta-Turbocharger-1-8T-MK4-99-05-Audi-TT-/130456036950?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e5fc92656

But is this a chocolate part, or would it be a worthwhile investment?

I'm a hgv technician by trade, so a bit of fiddling with a k04 wouldn't be too much hassle.

Unless anyone knows of a decent k03s for sale? :smug:

Apologies for all the newbie q's, my background is in bikes. Have managed to get 156bhp out of something that weighs 168kg naturally aspirated, so decided it's time to play with the golf

Keep the posts coming, enjoying the learning curve here

Managed to source a K03s for a decent price, fmic turnt up today.

Ordering up gaskets etc, on the hunt for a decent tip.

Should be fitting within the next week or so, then book up with Rtech.

Hopefully see some healthy numbers, will update when fitted

That's because he tried it on a NA engine.
Turbo engines benefit from larger bore exhaust's as it helps spool the turbo faster thanks to the gasses being passed on quicker.

What bikes have you got dude? And don't just say GSXR's!!

Will take plenty of pics while fitting this all if it's going to help someone out.

Bikes...

Roadbike is a GSXR 1000 K4, full Ti Scorpian system (ran with a racefit Ti slash pipe for a bit, f**king thing sounded like a monster truck ) Timing retard eliminator, ITG filters, full custom power commander 3 ignition map+dyno time, iridium plugs, 2+ teeth on rear sprocket, 1/5th turn race throttle and a few other nice bits. She goes well lol

Then the 7/11 streetfighter, 750m frame, gsxr 1100 (1127) engine, gsxr1000 k4 front end, hayabusa drag swingarm, carbon fibre R6 seat unit, Nitrous to fit...f**k me, could go on about this one all day...

Got rid of the GSXR 400 (gk76a) toyed with that quite a bit, shame really as I have a big bore piston kit for it I never fitted.

For getting muddy I've got a Yamaha YZ 426F running Ohlins and some tasty billet bits

Then there's the Honda

A monkey bike and a mini moto streetfighter that I'm saving for my boy when he's older, once he has the hang of that then I'll get him a tiny crosser, something like a PW50 to start off on.

Just can't seem to leave anything standard..... MUST modify

Had a look at the k03s unit for five minutes in my lunch break today, wastegate has poor operation so going to free this up, find a decent tip over the weekend and hopefully source all gaskets etc for it.

Then it's fmic fitting time, which looks like fun

Worked on HGV's for the last ten years, everything is bigger, albeit heavier but when it comes to cars everything is so compact compared to a 16 litre V8.

Always been one for a challenge so I'll post pics soon

Cheers

Might be worth chucking a Forge Actuator with a red spring on the turbo before fitting it

This will help control the boost nicely once its remapped :afro:

Get a forge TIP around £120 or R-Tech can supply these when getting the car mapped. Just notify them you want one supplied and fitted when you book in.
