as much as im loving my golf, it doesnt look like a gti, which is making me think if it actually is, but with it saying on the logbook, gti badges on it and a 1.8 20v lump (non-turbo), it must be?
however, its got 15" alloys, no spoiler, sits quite high like a ppl career, and needs a new exhaust
this is how its looks...

next yrs plans when ive got some spare money will be...
16" montreal alloys
spoiler
lower 30mm on jamex springs (£60 from online autosport)
new stainless steel custom exhaust (£200 from midlands exhaust specialists)
rear windows tinted (by a mate who works at halfords)
badgeless grille (bought by the gf)
remap
what do you all think?
thanks

it is a GTI.. i have a 1.8t gti and i have no rear spoiler and its quite high.. also you can tell yours is GTI because the rub strips are colour coded..
they are early mk4 wheels i believe..
-
I had a 3 door that colour, but mine was a 2.slow.
Yours has the later Avus 2 wheels, but as said before, and according to the sales brochures it is a GTI.
If it was mine I would go for 17" wheels with a suspension drop. Santa Monica's were a factory option from around 2002. 4Motion style exhaust with a valance to suit, Anniversary / R32 rear spoiler, but keep the standard grille. To do the badgless grille properly you need to fill the bumper recess and bonnet notch which will cost ££££ to do right.
I wouldn't spend too much money, and those mods you can take with you and fit on your next car. The 1.8T that you'll soon wish you had bought.
-
Welcome to mk4 ownership
-
One more thing, loose the 1.8 badge and fit a new all siver GTI badge in the correct position.
-
thanks for the replies, i also plan on taking it to the bodyshop next yr for the bonnet, bumpers, new spoiler and boot handle to be resprayed, so the recesses in the bonnet and bumper wont matter when i debadge it, ill be colour coding the lower sections as well on both bumpers

i thought 15s wouldnt fit a gti?

288mm Brakes require 16" wheels
280mm Brakes require 15"wheels
2.0 8v 1.8 20v N/A TDI 115 TDI 110 TDI 100 TDI 90 :
The Front brakes are 280mm x 22mm Vented Discs
Golf 1.8T Golf 130/150 TDI :
The Front brakes are 288mm x 25mm Vented Discs

as above thats what i was gona say

As far as remapping goes, I wouldn't bother on a NA engine as the gains are minuscule compared to cost. If you want more power from the engine you're really looking at basics of upgrading the panel filter and a decent exhaust system.
Then on top of that the more sensible options are to get the it gas flowed and port polished and tubular exhaust manifold blah blah blah...
A remap will release maybe 5bhp...
-
I'd also save up and get some fully adjustable coilovers for it too rather than just a lowering kit. That's just me though...
-
may only release 5bhp but it makes throttle response much better and makes the power more linear which makes more difference.. as above tho panel filter and exhaust..
-
i will also be getting a pipercross panel filter and having a full stainless steel exhaust before remap
my mate is breaking his 1.8T as its been ordered off the road by police, so i may enquire about his front brakes, whats the situation with rear brakes? same size or bigger on the 1.8T?
-
thats a good idea get what you can.. think larger brakes on gti rears.. 256mm

"Ordered off the road" for what?
-
for being a sh!te driver lol
-
lol, well he isnt be best of drivers, but he still didnt drive it as it should, but he was caught with 4 bald tyres and a cracked windscreen, but he cant afford to repair so hes breaking the car, shame really
to add, about coilovers, i was looking at these, but considering ive got one kid already and one on the way, i dont want it to become too uncomfortable, so softish lowering springs should be fine, nobody will know  lol

Wrong - Anni,V5 170, V6 4 Motion have 256mm vented rears
The rest have have 232mm solid rears
-
Are they not 228mm solids?

Are they not 228mm solids?

-
dunno haven't sourced them yet why do you know someone ??
-
I got a set from an lcr the other week for £130 with ok discs, pads were pony though
-
that doesn't seem to bad of a price.. i would wana change disks and pads anyways..
-
Aye, that's why I did mine. My driver side rear handbrake siezed and warped the hell outta my disc after 7 miles of thinking the turbo was gone  definitely worth doing as the originals look pathetic under 18's
-
yer they do look tiny..
-
I got them rears too :)
-
everyone other than me then lol
-
And the bigger fronts, and no it's not an Anni any more.
-
need them aswell just cant justify £200 for carriers and then disks..
-
ye ive changed my mind about having my mates brakes off him, think ill keep to what ive got
so if anyone is up for a full set of brakes off a 1.8T, they should be up for grabs soon
