Fitted on car a couple of weeks ago. First week used snowmasters on front and summer oem Bridgestones on the rear. Understeer then snapping into oversteer, not so good. Now snowmasters all round. Really predictable handling and so much better than summer tyres on these cold nights. No matter how much you pay for summer tyres they are not designed for use below 6C. (All these nice tyres tests seem to be done in warm weather).
I have fitted them to a set of oem Mk5 Monzas from a seller on ebay. They came with one brand new summer Avon, one fully worn tyre and two half worn tyres that have just worn out after 5,000 miles over summer. Cost £250. Deducting the value of tyres fitted makes the wheels free.
I'll report how good they are in snow when the weather gets worse.

ha just did the same as you , only i put on marangoni meteor hp winter tyres , couldnt find out much about them other than the tyre companys regurgitated sales pitch , be interesting to compare how they work out
-
The el cheapo Sunny's worked perfectly this morning (-1.5C). My over over hyped F1's were really rubbish in the cold. Glad to be rid of them, nasty trampy tyres, yuk to F1's.
-
The trouble is, the temp is below 6 C when I go to work, but well above it when I go home.
Am I supposed to swap my wheels over before I leave work, then again in the morning?
I think I'll just take it nice and steady on the cold mornings instead .
Isn't the 'Sunny' brandname a little odd for a winter tyre? (Yes I know it can be sunny in winter too .)

the maragonis worked well to , a bit of a woolen feel but if u needed the breaks really pulled the car up quick even better than summer tyres , as for f1s i dont know why people rate them so highly i was very disappointed by the would rate mitchelins above them but will be putting pirellis on next for summer tyres

I really disliked my F1's. Banging axle tramp, loads of road noise, too quick to wear out and not suited to the GTIs traction control software (on a hot day around a track they might well be very good, maybe). The Snowmasters were just great today in the cold. They work OK when it's a warm day (like most tyres).
Winter tyres = happy GTI

I tend not to go mental in snowy weather so can't really justify the costs. I've done 2 winters now with F1s on and been ok. I appreciate they aren't ideal but I'm not made of money. Shouldn't really be "pressing on" in snowy / icey conditions anyway. As soon as it snows the car doesn't leave te drive way (I might know what I'm doing in the snow but Doris in her RWD company car BMW doesn't). Not worth the risk taking her out in the snow unless it's to the local abandoned car park for some fun :D
-
..........same here.If the snow is really bad the GTI stays at home,i dout even winter tyres would be any good in 3 feet of snow.Winter tyres won't change your GTI into a 4x4 :smug:.

interesting comments about f 1 ,s , alot of peaple seem to have same view of them but as far as i can see across diferent forums they still seem to be popular , maragonnis very good today in slicing threw back roads that were partially flooded beat previous f1s and michellins in doing same , unfortunately job i am in i have 40 mile journey to make rain hail ice or snow no matter how deep , and staying at home is not an option , so if investing in winter tyres keeps me safer and mobile its worth it , i have drivin in harsh weather of all types in summer tyres without much bother u just change driving style to accomadate but the problem tends to be meeting less skilled drivers on road eg driving out in front of u or getting caught out on hills ,
-
I too have invested in some 17" Monzas as spares now, just looking for a decent winter tyre to go on them that won't cost the earth.
My reasons are I don't have an option to stay at home or leave the GTI, Rain Sleet or Snow were on the road, so if it helps its worth it.
It also keeps the 18" Monzas out of the bad weather.
-
if u have the money go for michelin alpins , goodyear ultra grips , dunlop winter ice 3d or continental winter tyres they all seem much of a muchness , cheaper tyres avon ice sts or maragoonis but not sure how well they work in snow but seem to be ok in general winter season weather , the availability of winter tyres may be more of an issue in uk so your choices might be limited
-
mytyres have lots in stock, with free delivery from Germany.
-
loads places say they have winter tyres but when you go to buy the ones you want arnt in stock also you might get them cheaper locally , maragonnis are cheaper fitted balanced in kwik fit than buying on my tyres
-
so can't really justify the costs.
There is not really any cost to having a set of winter tyres. You can only wear one set of tyres out at a time
-
i agree with dubber36 i will prob spend alot more money on a set of summer tyres to go on to my bbs next spring than it did to kit me out with winter rims and tyres and i hope to get good few winters out of them , if they keep me mobile and safer in the snow and ice i think it should be money well spent

Usually saves you money in the long run. Winter tyres are cheaper than the high performance summer tyres and you'll not be spinning away all that expensive rubber in winter with less grip and more spin.
Winter tyres have better grip, better braking - so safer too.
It is one of those win/win situations that people don't generally think about, but when you do - it's a no brainer
-
So what are the disadvantages and/or dangers of running winter tyres in the summer time...?
Thank you,
Billy
-
Greater wear on the winter tyre and longer braking distances than a summer tyre would give
-
well today was the day to test the winter tyres , ice and snow , still some spinning up but alot less than f1s just have to go easy on the pedal , much better grip , breaking alot better to , corners well , only issues was tended to throw snow and slush in below the mudguards , and salt spray up the sides of the car , it must be the rougher tread pattern , well pleased,
-
maragonis just got there hardest test to date , up a back road in the back of beyond on a very steep hill covered in snow and ice and i mean real ice the slippery kind , in minus 6 , thick fog , and some light snow , it was really hairy , car spinning and sliding all over the place , but i think if i had been driving with summer tyres i would have been in real trouble , the maragonis got me to my destination and back there were a few hairy moments , but if i had the f1,s on i am sure i would have been in the ditch ,
what are other peoples experiences , any feedback on the sunny tyres

I'm fishing in northern thailand at the moment. No chance to use the gti. Back on friday.

I have F1's all round and I'm not impressed at all. Last Wednesday, the day of the bad snow, I finished work in Leeds at 10:15 headed out on Scott Hall Road, (steep hill) to home. I needed to be pushed most of the way up it by some kind locals who on a normal day would probably want to nick my GTI but on this day they were helpful.
I have to say that I'm considering purchasing some winter tyres if this weather is gong to be the norm from now on.
-
As has been said, the F1s are pretty terrible in the snow. Got them on mine, makes power sliding more fun though :D :D
-
here was hit by extremely heavey snow yesterday for 4 hours traffic was bumber to bumper and not moving at all , loads abandoned cars all over the place , i drove right through the very worst of it , a few slides , but at one stage i was one of few cars that made headway , i now consider winter tyres and set of rims of ebay one of the best recent investments i have made , came home over the mountain tonight meeting cars spinning from side to side , i wasnt worried about my car sliding more worried they were goin to plow into me ,
tell you what does surprise me the price winter tyres have gone up by i know its supply and demand but people are bein ripped of by the retailers some makes are now double the price they were a month ago ,
-
Think I will purchase a set in the summer of next year when the price is low. Luckily we have not had lots of heavy snow in our area but I think they could be a worthwhile investment for the future.
-
First time on frozen iced-over snow = fantastic.
Winter tyres should be on every UK GTI at this time of year, full stop.
-
For a cheap tyre they work fantastically in snow. I would buy again.
My brother lives up a hilly country track. Taking my mum to his for christmas today I got up the snowy hill. The first time ever.
And came down again safely (fit winters to all 4 wheels).
